The Index of ADL was developed to study results of treatment and prognosis in the elderly and chronically ill. Grades of the Index summarize over-all performance in bathing, dressing, going to toilet, transferring, continence, and feeding. More than 2,000 evaluations of 1,001 individuals demonstrated use of the Index as a survey instrument, as an objective guide to the course of chronic illness, as a tool for studying the aging process, and as an aid in rehabilitation teaching. Of theoretical interest is the observation that the order of recovery of Index functions in disabled patients is remarkably similar to the order of development of primary functions in children. This parallelism, and similarity to the behavior of primitive peoples, suggests that the Index is based on primary biological and psychosocial function, reflecting the adequacy of organized neurological and locomotor response.read more

Social Determinants of Tooth Loss
TL;DR: Race and SES are strong determinants of tooth loss, and AAs and lower SES persons are more likely to receive a dental extraction once they enter the dental care system, given the same disease extent and severity.

TL;DR: Low daytime SBP was independently associated with a greater progression of cognitive decline in older patients with dementia and MCI among those treated with AHDs, and Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring can be useful to help avoid high blood pressure overtreatment in this population.

TL;DR: The consensus of the SIOG Prostate Cancer Task Force is that older men with prostate cancer should be managed according to their individual health status, which is mainly driven by the severity of associated comorbid conditions, and not according to chronological age.

Surrogate Decision-Makers' Perspectives on Discussing Prognosis in the Face of Uncertainty

TL;DR: The majority of surrogates of patients that are critically ill want physicians to disclose their prognostic estimates even if they cannot be certain they are correct, stems from surrogates' belief that prognostic uncertainty is simultaneously unavoidable and acceptable.
