The observation and the insensitivity of the xylitol transport to low temperature suggest that the facilitator behaves as a membrane channel.Abstract:
The specificity of the glycerol facilitator (glpF) of Escherichia coli was studied with an osmotic method. This transport system allowed the entry of polyols (glycerol and erythritol), pentitols, and hexitols. The analogous sugars were not transported. However, urea, glycine, and DL-glyceraldehyde could use this pathway to enter the cell. The glpF protein allowed the rapid efflux of preequilibrated xylitol. Glycerol surprisingly did not inhibit the uptake of xylitol, and xylitol only slightly reduced the uptake of glycerol. The observation and the insensitivity of the xylitol transport to low temperature suggest that the facilitator behaves as a membrane channel.read more

TL;DR: The IIAGlc protein, part of the glucose-specific PTS, is a central regulatory protein which in its nonphosphorylated form can bind to and inhibit several non-PTS uptake systems and thus prevent entry of inducers.

How Phosphotransferase System-Related Protein Phosphorylation Regulates Carbohydrate Metabolism in Bacteria
TL;DR: The known protein phosphorylation-related regulatory functions of the PTS are summarized, which shows that the PTS regulation network not only controls carbohydrate uptake and metabolism but also interferes with the utilization of nitrogen and phosphorus and the virulence of certain pathogens.

TL;DR: The permeability function the cell wall of gram-negative bacteria such as Salmoenlla was investigated by producing cells with an expanded periplasmic volume, and incubating them with radioactive non-utilizable oligo- and polysaccharides or polyethylene glycols, finding that only di- and trisaccharides could fully diffuse into theperiplasm, whereas higher-molecular-weight saccharides were nonpenetrable.
