Abstract
A new polymer-ceramic nanocomposite has been synthesized consisting of well-dispersed, two-dimensional layers of an organically modified mica-type silicate (MTS) within a degradable poly(e-caprolactone) matrix. A protonated amino acid derivative of MTS was used to promote delamination/dispersion of the host layers and initiate ring-opening polymerization of e-caprolactone monomer, resulting in poly(e-caprolactone) chains that are ionically bound to the silicate layers. The polymer chains can be released from the silicate surface by a reverse ion-exchange reaction and were shown to be spectroscopically similar to pure poly(e-caprolactone). Thick films of the polymer nanocomposite exhibit a significant reduction in water vapor permeability that shows a linear dependence on silicate content. The permeability of nanocomposite containing as low as 4.8% silicate by volume was reduced by nearly an order of magnitude compared to pure poly(e-caprolactone)

Preparation and thermal properties of epoxy-silica nanocomposites from nanoscale colloidal silica

TL;DR: In this paper, the epoxy-silica nanocomposites were obtained from directly blending diglycidylether of bisphenol-A and nanoscale colloidal silica and then curing with 4,4-diaminodiphenylmethane.

Simulation of interphase percolation and gradients in polymer nanocomposites

TL;DR: In this paper, a two-dimensional finite element model is developed to study the impact of interphase zones on the overall properties of the composite and the simulation results clearly show that the loss moduli of composites are either broadened or shifted corresponding to the absence or presence of a geometrically percolating interphase network.

A review of the water barrier properties of polymer/clay and polymer/graphene nanocomposites

TL;DR: In this article, the authors reviewed the literature on moisture barrier properties of polymer/clay and polymer/graphene-based nanocomposites and proposed various models to predict the effects of nanofillers in reducing water vapour permeability through polymers.

Clay nanolayer reinforcement of cis‐1,4‐polyisoprene and epoxidized natural rubber

TL;DR: In this paper, conditions were established for dispersing clay nanolayers into both cis-1,4-polyisoprene (synthetic) natural rubber (NR) and epoxidized natural rubbers (ENR) having 25 or 50 mol % epoxide.

Synthetic Biodegradable Aliphatic Polyester/Montmorillonite Nanocomposites

TL;DR: In this paper, a solvent-casting method using chloroform as a cosolvent to produce nanocomposite (BAP/OMMT) was used for X-ray diffraction analysis and the microstructure of BAP and OMMT was examined by transmission electron microscopy.
