TLDR
In this paper, the performance characteristics of a plain journal bearing are studied theoretically using a thermodynamic analysis of a bearing lubricated by a nonlinear (cubic) fluid model, and experiments are carried out on a simple journal bearing test rig to study the performance of a full journal bearing with different types of non-Newtonian lubricants, including water-based fluid (WBF).Abstract:
The performance characteristics of a plain journal bearing are studied theoretically using a thermodynamic analysis of a bearing lubricated by a nonlinear (cubic) fluid model. Experimental investigations are carried out on a simple journal bearing test rig to study the performance of a full journal bearing with different types of non-Newtonian lubricants, including water-based fluid (WBF). Experiments include the measurement of eccentricity ratio, critical speed and stability limit. A comparative study of the bering performance is carried out by using two oils which have the same zero shear rate viscosity but different rheological behaviour. The results show that the bearing performance of non-Newtonian oil largely depends on the rheological behaviour of the oil. A comparative study of the theory and experiment is also attemptedread more

Linear stability of short journal bearings with consideration of flow rheology and surface roughness
Cheng-I. Weng,Chien-Ru Chen +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the combined effects of surface roughness and flow rheology on the linear stability of a rigid rotor supported on short-length journal bearings are analyzed, where the modified Reynolds equation and the rotor motion equation are linearized about the equilibrium position and the fluid film is modeled as spring and damping elements.

Comparison of Non-Newtonian Constitutive Laws in Hydrodynamic Lubrication
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared several non-Newtonian models (as opposed to generalized Newtonian) and found that the Stokes couple stress model shows a significant increase in load capacity.
