In this article, a review summarizes the different rare-earth cations and host materials used in mid-infrared fiber laser technology, and discusses the future applications and challenges for the field.
Abstract
Fibre lasers in the mid-infrared regime are useful for a diverse range of fields, including chemical and biomedical sensing, military applications and materials processing. This Review summarizes the different rare-earth cations and host materials used in mid-infrared fibre laser technology, and discusses the future applications and challenges for the field.

Versatile and widely tunable mid-infrared erbium doped ZBLAN fiber laser

TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented a long wavelength emitting rare earth doped fiber laser with emission centered at 3.5 µm and tunable across 450 nm, the longest wavelength emission was 3.78 µm, which is the longest emission from a fiber laser operating at room temperature.

Highly sensitive and accurate optical thermometer through Er doped tellurite glasses

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the thermal effects of Er3+ doped tellurite glasses on the upconversion properties and found that the sensitivity of the thermometer based on the FIR technique increases monotonously with the decreasing doping concentration, indicating the feasibility of using high laser power and low doping sample to produce both high sensitivity and high accuracy.

Random distributed feedback fiber laser at 2.1 μm.

TL;DR: This is the first demonstration of random distributed feedback fiber laser at 2 μm band based on Raman gain, and could be further improved by more pump power and optimized fiber length.

3.42 µm lasing in heavily-erbium-doped fluoride fibers.

TL;DR: This work studies transverse mode-beating of the 1976 nm core pump and its role in the generation of a periodic luminescent grating and in the trapping of excitation in the metastable energy levels of the erbium system.

Wideband thulium–holmium-doped fiber source with combined forward and backward amplified spontaneous emission at 1600–2300 nm spectral band

TL;DR: Two extremely wideband amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) sources are experimentally demonstrated by combining the backward and forward ASEs generated in thulium-holmium-doped fiber using appropriate wideband couplers.

Optical Constants of Water in the 200-nm to 200-microm Wavelength Region.

TL;DR: Extinction coefficients k(lambda) for water at 25 degrees C were determined through a broad spectral region by manually smoothing a point by point graph of k( lambda) vs wavelength lambda that was plotted for data obtained from a review of the scientific literature on the optical constants of water.

Quantum cascade laser

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a quantum cascade laser consisting of a gain region (14) consisting of several layers (20) each including: alternating strata of a first type (28) defining each AllnAs quantum barrier and strata with injection barriers interposed between two of the layers.

Laser beam combining for high-power, high-radiance sources

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide an overview of beam combining and highlight some of the tradeoffs among beam-combining techniques, including wavelength (spectral) and coherent (phased array) techniques.
