Ultrastructural features of six types of neurons in rat dorsal root ganglia.
TLDR
Sections of glutaraldehyde-fixed lumbar dorsal root ganglia of the rat were examined in the electron microscope following impregnation with the uranyl-lead-copper technique or postfixation in potassium ferrocyanide-reduced osmium to identify three types of ganglion cells.Abstract:
Sections of glutaraldehyde-fixed lumbar dorsal root ganglia of the rat were examined in the electron microscope following impregnation with the uranyl-lead-copper technique or postfixation in potassium ferrocyanide-reduced osmium. Three types of ganglion cells (A, B, C) were identified on the basis of their size and the distribution of their organelles. They were further subdivided into six subtypes according to the arrangement and three-dimensional organization of the Nissl bodies and Golgi apparatus in the perikarya. Type A1 cells were large, clear neurons in which Nissl bodies, separated from each other by pale narrow strands of cytoplasm containing small stacks of Golgi saccules and rod-like mitochondria, were evenly distributed throughout the perikaryon. In type A2, the Nissl bodies assumed a similar distribution but were separated by much wider strands of cytoplasm. Type A3, the smallest of the type A category, displayed densely packed Nissl bodies and long stacks of Golgi saccules which formed a perinuclear ring in the mid-portion of the perikaryon.read more

Primary sensory neurons of the rat showing calcitonin gene-related peptide immunoreactivity and their relation to substance P-, somatostatin-, galanin-, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide- and cholecystokinin-immunoreactive ganglion cells.

TL;DR: The present results indicate that a CGRP-like peptide is present in a wide range of primary sensory neurons probably not related to specific sensory modalities and often this peptide coexists with other biologically active peptides.

Selective neuronal glycoconjugate expression in sensory and autonomic ganglia : relation of lectin reactivity to peptide and enzyme markers

TL;DR: These studies illustrate significant lectin-reactive cell surface carbohydrate expression by non-peptidergic, FRAP(+) sensory ganglion cells in the rat, and provide a means for visualizing the extensive, non- peptiderGic, small sensoryganglion cell subpopulations, probably including a substantial proportion of nociceptive and unmyelinated peripheral axons.

TL;DR: The present results indicate that two subpopulations of primary sensory neurons exist, one containing somatostatin, or som atostatin-like immunoreactivity, and the other containing substance P, or substance P-like Immunoreactivity.

Golgi apparatus, gerl, and lysosomes of neurons in rat dorsal root ganglia, studied by thick section and thin section cytochemistry
TL;DR: Serial 0.5-µ and thin sections of thiamine pyrophosphatase-incubated material demonstrate that, in the neurons studied, the Golgi apparatus is a continuous network coursing through the cytoplasm, and suggest that GERL is also a continuous structure throughout the cy toplasm.
