TLDR
TimeRider, an improved animated scatter plot for cohorts of diabetes patients that tackles three additional challenges when exploring patient cohorts, shows that animation does support physicians in their work and provides further domain-specific evidence in the discussion on the effectiveness of animation.Abstract:
The effectiveness of animation in visualization is an interesting research topic that led to contradicting results in the past. On top of that, we are facing three additional challenges when exploring patient cohorts: irregular sampling, data wear, and data sets covering different portions of time. We present TimeRider, an improved animated scatter plot for cohorts of diabetes patients that tackles these challenges along with its evaluation with physicians. Results show that animation does support physicians in their work and provide further domain-specific evidence in the discussion on the effectiveness of animation.read more

Interactive Information Visualization to Explore and Query Electronic Health Records
Alexander Rind,Taowei David Wang,Wolfgang Aigner,Silvia Miksch,Krist Wongsuphasawat,Catherine Plaisant,Ben Shneiderman +6 more
TL;DR: This monograph is written for both scientific researchers and designers of future user interfaces for EHRs to help them understand this vital domain and appreciate the features and virtues of existing systems, so they can create still more advanced systems.

DimpVis: Exploring Time-varying Information Visualizations by Direct Manipulation.
TL;DR: It is demonstrated how the DimpVis technique can be designed to directly manipulate position, colour, and size in familiar visualizations such as bar charts and scatter plots, as a means for temporal navigation.

TL;DR: The effectiveness of the tool is demonstrated for two uses cases: prediction of a cardiac conduction disorder in patients after receiving a heart valve implant and prediction of hypernatremia in critically ill patients.

The Connected Scatterplot for Presenting Paired Time Series
TL;DR: This work describes how paired time series relationships appear in a connected scatterplot, qualitatively evaluates how well people understand trends depicted in this format, and quantitatively measure the types and frequency of misinter pretations.

Comparative Evaluation of an Interactive Time-Series Visualization that Combines Quantitative Data with Qualitative Abstractions
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report on a controlled experiment that compares this technique with another visualization method used in the well-known KNAVE-II framework and show that the test persons using the composite representation were generally faster, particularly for more complex tasks that involve quantitative values as well as qualitative abstractions.

Interaction Design: Beyond Human-Computer Interaction.
TL;DR: Interaction Design as discussed by the authors is an ideal resource for learning the interdisciplinary skills needed for interaction design, human-computer interaction, information design, web design, and ubiquitous computing, encompassing the latest technologies and devices including social networking, Web 2.0 and mobile devices.

Animation: can it facilitate?
TL;DR: In cases where animated graphics seem superior to static ones, scrutiny reveals lack of equivalence between animated and static graphics in content or procedures; the animated graphics convey more information or involve interactivity.

Automating the design of graphical presentations of relational information
TL;DR: APT as discussed by the authors is an application-independent presentation tool that automatically designs effective graphical presentations (such as bar charts, scatter plots, and connected graphs) of relational information, based on the view that graphical presentations are sentences of graphical languages.
