Water distribution in incubated slices of brain and other tissues.

TLDR
With glutamate or high potassium in the medium, swelling is increased and the non-thiocyanate, non-sucrose, and non-inulin spaces increase correspondingly, and this increase is apparently intracellular.
Abstract
Slices of rat cerebral cortex swell about 40% during one hour's aerobic incubation in bicarbonate-buffered medium. Thiocyanate or sucrose added to the medium equilibrate with part of the tissue flu...

Factors influencing the insulin space in cerebral cortex slices from adult and 7-day-old rats.

TL;DR: The inulin spaces and swelling of brain cortex slices from adult and 7-day-old rats were measured under differing experimental conditions and inulin in osmotically inactive concentrations considerably reduces the swelling ofbrain cortex slices.

Osmotic behavior and glial changes in isolated frog brains.

TL;DR: The electron-microscopical findings, which showed swelling of only the glial fraction of the cell population of brain tissue in vitro, correlate well with the small osmotically active fraction of frog brains, suggesting that the water and electrolyte movements could be regulated by glial cells.

Peripheral nerve reconnection: inhibition of early degenerative processes through the use of a novel fluid medium.

TL;DR: The results suggested a new method for reducing posttraumatic neural disruption and supported the hypothesis regarding the involvement of calmodulin or some other Ca2+ binding protein in Wallerian degeneration.

Problems associated with Studies of Electrolyte Metabolism in Normal and Epileptogenic Cerebral Cortex

D. B. Tower
- 01 Sep 1965 -
TL;DR: The general problems associated with investigations of fluid and electrolyte distribution and compartmentation in cerebral tissues have been discussed and specific aspects of the variation of cortical fluid spaces in vivo as a function of species brain size have been emphasized.
