TL;DR: In this paper, the thickness of surface films were analyzed by infrared multiple reflectance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and the results indicated that the protectiveness of the surface films was dependent on the pretreatment temperature.
Abstract: Corrosion protection afforded by pretreating copper in aqueous benzotriazole solutions at temperatures ranging from 25 to 100 C were evaluated. Electrochemical characteristics of pretreated copper mirrors were monitored using rapid polarization techniques. Thickness of surface films were analyzed by infrared multiple reflectance spectroscopy. Topography of surface films prior to and subsequent to test exposures was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Defects in protective films on pretreated copper mirrors were detected by immersion in silver nitrate solutions. The resulting silver “decorations” identified both the location and density of active corrosion sites in the multilayer protective films. Exchange current densities, corrosion current densities, corrosion rates determined by chemical analyses, electrical double layer capacities, and the densities of active corrosion sites all showed similar dependencies on pretreatment temperatures. All techniques indicated that the protectiveness of...

TL;DR: In this article, the rates of hydrogen penetration in annealed iron in 1N H2SO4 containing various thiourea and triazole compounds have been measured by the electrochemical technique.
Abstract: The rates of hydrogen penetration in annealed iron in 1N H2SO4 containing various thiourea and triazole compounds have been measured by the electrochemical technique. Corrosion rates were measured by the polarization method. The organic compounds selected for this study are thiourea, phenylthiourea, tolylthiourea, triazole, benzotriazole, and tolyltriazole. At lower organic concentrations, thiourea, phenylthiourea, tolylthiourea, and triazole were corrosion accelerators, while at all concentrations studied, benzotriazole and tolyltriazole were corrosion inhibitors. All three thiourea compounds accelerated the hydrogen penetration rate in iron, while the three triazole compounds were hydrogen penetration inhibitors. Thiourea accelerated and tolyltriazole inhibited hydrogen penetration to the greatest extent. Correlations between the open circuit hydrogen penetration rate and the corrosion rate have been obtained for the two groups of organic compounds. For the thiourea compounds, open circuit hydr...

Abstract: The synergistic effects of sodium benzoate and benzotriazole in inhibiting the corrosion of grey cast iron in 50% ethanediol/water solutions are described. Good inhibition can be obtained in the presence of both inhibitors at concentrations of eachwhich are ineffective when either inhibitor is present alone. The results also showthat the inhibitors are effective on both ‘as-cast’ and machined surfaces. Limited information is presented to demonstrate a similar synergistic effect for the inhibition of corrosion of an aluminium alloy. Some possible adsorption mechanisms to explain these effects are considered briefly.
