TL;DR: The main theme of the research is the integration of the necessary planning systems, models of the world, and sensory processing systems into an efficient whole capable of performing a wide range of tasks in a real environment.
Abstract: A research project applying artificial intelligence techniques to the development of integrated robot systems Is described. The experimental facility consists of an SDS-940 computer and associated programs controlling a wheeled vehicle that carries a TV camera and other sensors. The primary emphasis is on the development of a system of programs for processing sensory data from the vehicle, for storing relevant information about the environment, and for planning the sequence of motor actions necessary to accomplish tasks in the environment. A typical task performed by our present system requires the robot vehicle to rearrange (by pushing) simple objects in its environment A novel feature of our approach is the use of a formal theorem-proving system to plan the execution of high-level functions as a sequence of other, perhaps lower-level, functions. The execution of these, in turn, requires additional planning at lower levels. The main theme of the research is the integration of the necessary planning systems, models of the world, and sensory processing systems into an efficient whole capable of performing a wide range of tasks in a real environment.

TL;DR: A new type of visual feature extracting network has been synthesized, and the response of the network has be simulated on a digital computer as a first step towards the realization of a recognizer of handwritten characters.
Abstract: A new type of visual feature extracting network has been synthesized, and the response of the network has been simulated on a digital computer. This research has been done as a first step towards the realization of a recognizer of handwritten characters. The design of the network was suggested by biological systems, especially, the visual systems of cat and monkey. The network is composed of analog threshold elements connected in layers. Each analog threshold element receives inputs from a large number of elements in the neighbouring layers and performs its own special functions. It takes care of one restricted part of the photoreceptor layer, on which an input pattem is presented, and it responds to one particular feature of the input pattem, such as brightness contrast, a dot in the pattern, a line segment of a particular orientation, or an end of the line. This means that the network performs parallel processing of the information. With the propagation of the information through the layered network, the input pattern is successively decomposed into dots, groups of line segments of the same orientation, and the ends of these line segments.

TL;DR: There is still some disagreement about the application of the term kenning as mentioned in this paper, and some scholars continue to espouse Rudolf Meissner's broad description of the kening as ''ein zweigliedriger Ersatz fiir ein Substantivum der gewbhnlichen Rede''.
Abstract: HERE is still some disagreement about the application of the term kenning. Some scholars continue to espouse Rudolf Meissner's broad description of the kenning as \"ein zweigliedriger Ersatz fiir ein Substantivum der gewbhnlichen Rede.\" 1 Others have accepted the restriction of the term to the so-called Metapher mit Ablenkung proposed by Andreas Heusler.2 But just as important as the disagreement itself is the fact that it has left related issues clouded. Kemp Malone, who accepts the former point of view, includes the following symptomatic statement in his treatment of rhetorical \"stereotypes\" in OE poetry:

TL;DR: In this article, a study was conducted to evaluate vestibular function in the acute and chronic stages of Wernicke's disease and it was found that ataxia of stance and gait occurs in 87% of the patients and only 20% of lower extremities.
Abstract: Wernicke's disease is a well-defined clinical and pathological entity, and its aetiology has been conclusively traced to thiamine deficiency (Phillips, Victor, Adams, and Davidson, 1952). Its essential features are the subacute onset of confusion, ophthalmoplegia and/or nystagmus, and ataxia of stance and gait. It invariably occurs against a background of malnutrition and often chronic alcoholism. Ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and the global confusion respond readily to thiamine administration, but the patient is often left with a conspicuous disorder in memory (Korsakoff's psychosis), and not infrequently some degree of ataxia when attempting to walk on a narrow base (heel to toe). In the acute stages of the disease there is frequently a striking discrepancy between the patient's ability to stand and walk and his ability to perform tests designed to assess cerebellar function-that is, heel-to-shin, finger-to-nose, etc. The patient may literally be unable to take even a few steps without support; his legs are rigidly held wide apart, the body pitched forward as he clutches the nearest solid object for fear of falling. In a study of 245 patients with Wernicke's disease by Victor, Adams, Collins, and Silby (to be published), it was found that ataxia of stance and gait occurs in 87 %, whereas ataxia of the lower extremities in only 20 %. One interpretation of this finding attributes the ataxia of stance and gait to lesions in the midline cerebellar vermis, and the ataxia of the lower extremities to an extension of the lesion into more lateral areas of the anterior lobes (Victor, Adams, and Mancall, 1959). Vestibular function, which is known to be of paramount importance in the regulation of postural adjustments, has not heretofore been determined. This study was undertaken to evaluate vestibular function in the acute and chronic stages of Wemicke's disease.

TL;DR: A modified version of the Isodata or K-means clustering algorithm is applied to a set of patterns originally proposed by Block, Nilsson, and Duda, and to another artificial alphabet.
Abstract: The objects and methods of automatic feature extraction on binary patterns are briefly reviewed. An intuitive interpretation for geometric features is suggested whereby such a feature is conceived of as a cluster of component vectors in pattern space. A modified version of the Isodata or K-means clustering algorithm is applied to a set of patterns originally proposed by Block, Nilsson, and Duda, and to another artificial alphabet. Results are given in terms of a figure-of-merit which measures the deviation between the original patterns and the patterns reconstructed from the automatically derived feature set.

TL;DR: In this paper, a variable electronic mask is used to select any area of the specimen within the view of the camera for feature analysis without moving the specimen, and check spot pulses are generated for each feature.
Abstract: A specimen analyzer including a video camera for scanning a specimen and selectively counting features thereof on the basis of grey level and size. The device may operate in several modes to count only features darker (or lighter) than a selected grey level, to count only features that are darker than a first grey level but lighter than a second grey level, to count only features wider than a selected width, to count only features wider than a first width but not as wide as a second width, or to count features that meet more than one of these tests. A variable electronic mask permits the operator to select any area of the specimen within the view of the camera for feature analysis without moving the specimen. Check spot pulses are generated for each feature counted and these may be displayed on a video motor superimposed on a video display of the specimen.

TL;DR: In this article, a radio distance measuring device is presented for acknowledging proximity between a first object carrying the equipment and a second object, which includes a transmitter and a receiver, and the coherent feature of the equipment lies in the fact that the transmitter pulsed output and the pulsed reference signals are both generated with the same starting phase each generated pulse.
Abstract: Apparatus is herein disclosed for imminent collision detection equipment for acknowledging proximity between a first object carrying the equipment and a second object. The imminent collision detection apparatus is a radio distance measuring device and includes a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter has a pulsed energy output which is reflected back by a target and mixed with a reference source of pulsed energy generated a predetermined time after the transmitted output and coherent thereto. The coherent feature of the equipment lies in the fact that the transmitter pulsed output and the pulsed reference signals are both generated with the same starting phase each generated pulse. Furthermore, the transmitted and reference signals are jittered to provide a resistance to countermeasures capability.

TL;DR: In this article, a system for counting features in image analysis systems employing line scanning is presented, in which a single pulse is generated and the end of the scan of each feature is retained for release at the same instant as the count pulse.
Abstract: Systems for counting features in image analysis systems employing line scanning in which a single pulse is generated and the end of the scan of each feature. Information associated with each feature can also be retained for release at the same instant as the count pulse. In some systems means are provided for advancing information in the frame scan direction against the line scan direction to thereby advance the instant at which information is available in the next line subject to the local shape of the feature. The preferred feature of such systems is a degree of option whereby the circuit can select the best of a number of alternative time intervals by which information can be advanced so as to reduce the area of paralysis beyond the feature in the line scan direction. A system is disclosed for producing a signal having a parameter whose value is representative of one or more geometrical properties of a feature under analysis in which increments of information are obtained from each line scan intersecting the feature and accumulated in a memory device for processing. The final information signal is then released by the count pulse. A further system is disclosed by which a size criterion can be placed on the intersects of line scans with a feature and a count pulse generated only if at least one of the intersects exceeds the size limitation.

Abstract: Distributions of segment sizes have been measured under routine operating conditions on a computer system which utilizes variable-sized segments (the Burroughs B5500). The most striking feature of the measurements is the large number of small segments - about 60% of the segments in use contain less than 40 words. Although the results are certainly not installation-independent, they should be relevant to the design of new computer systems, especially with respect to the organization of paging schemes.
