TL;DR: A basic solution strategy for the optimal layout design of a satellite module, which consists of two stages, global layout design and detailed layout design, and demonstrates its feasibility and validity on an application instance.
Abstract: Layout design of a satellite module directly concerns its structure, performance, service life, and cost of assembly and maintenance. It is an important and NP-complete problem. The main difficulties consist of combinatorial optimizations in mathematics and system complexity in engineering practice, and relevant researches are far from enough. This paper proposes a basic solution strategy for the optimal layout design of a satellite module, which consists of two stages, global (or loose) layout design and detailed layout design. Corresponding algorithms are then developed while taking the layout design of an international commercial communication satellite as an example. They are the centripetal balancing method for global layout design and a quasi Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) model-based Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm for layout optimization. The proposed method demonstrates its feasibility and validity on an application instance. Existing problems and further research directions are finally...

Abstract: The design of a layout is a critical step, which may have a major influence on the success of a plant, particularly when demand is uncertain and variable. In order to counter this variability, one of two strategies is generally adopted, i.e. the identification of either a robust or an agile layout. This study proposes the adoption of indices that will help in identifying the strategy to be preferred. Starting from the case of a single row layout, the results of an experimental campaign are presented and discussed in order to show the efficacy of the indices themselves. Their calculation takes into account the profile of demand over time together with the product route sheets.

Abstract: Multi‐arm, collaborative, synchronous robots are gaining acceptance in industry, because of the cycle time reduction, productivity increase, flexibility and quality gain, distributed control, layout design/simulation, and programming support robot manufacturers and system integrators can offer. On the negative side, when things go wrong such systems are more complex to recover, and maintain, than non‐networked and non‐distributed controlled individual robots. In this paper, we introduce some of the most important engineering, and technology management principles that collaborate robots and their users and should be kept in mind while developing such systems, and/or planning for such applications.

TL;DR: In this paper, a methodology for designing the cavity layout for plastic injection molds by controlling the geometrical parameters using a standardisation template is presented, which can be customised easily for each mold making company to their own standards.
Abstract: Today, the time-to-market for plastic products is becoming shorter, thus the lead time available for making the injection mould is decreasing. There is potential for timesaving in the mould design stage because a design process that is repeatable for every mould design can be standardised. This paper presents a methodology for designing the cavity layout for plastic injection moulds by controlling the geometrical parameters using a standardisation template. The standardisation template for the cavity layout design consists of the configurationsfor the possible layouts. Each configuration of the layout design has its own layout design table of all the geometrical parameters. This standardisation template is pre-defined at the layout design level of the mould assembly design. This ensures that the required configuration can be loaded into the mould assembly design very quickly, without the need to redesign the layout. This makes it useful in technical discussions between the product designers and mould designers prior to the manufacture of the mould. Changes can be made to the 3D cavity layout design immediately during the discussions, thus saving time and avoiding miscommunication. This standardisation template for the cavity layout design can be customised easily for each mould making company to their own standards.

TL;DR: In this paper, an expert system program package called ALDES (Accommodation Layout Design Expert System) was developed by using CLIPS expert system shell in order to asses the current approach, and preliminary dimensions of a container ship were calculated by a heuristic approach supported by a database of similar strips, empirical formulation, and deterministic analysis techniques.
Abstract: Ship design applications are carried out mainly by human experts who generally utilise computerised deterministic analysis techniques. Application of stochastic methods, and formalisation of heuristic methods in computer aided ship design have not been widely utilised yet. This work investigates whether such a heuristic method, namely expert system approach, can be satisfactorily applied into ship design. An expert system program package called ALDES (Accommodation Layout Design Expert System) was developed by using CLIPS expert system shell in order to asses the current approach. Preliminary dimensions of a container ship were calculated by a heuristic approach supported by a database of similar strips, empirical formulation, and deterministic analysis techniques. The hull was subdivided into main compartments by locating decks, double bottom, and transverse bulkheads. The number of crew was calculated by utilising manning regulations, then the superstructure layout was developed by assigning spaces for access, passageways, public and private rooms. Two cases were selected to test the current approach: firstly the effects of design heuristics were analysed in an evacuation analysis, and secondly a preliminary concept design for a fast containership was conducted. In conclusion, this study presents a case study approach in which an expert system is applied into ship design domain successfully with layout design emphasis.

TL;DR: A new, hierarchical representation that includes browser screen coordinates for every HTML object on a page and a classification system which, taking into account the proposed document layout analysis clearly outperforms standard systems by 10%; or more.
Abstract: Extracting and processing information from web pages is an important task in many areas such as constructing search engines, information retrieval, and data mining from the web. A common approach in the extraction process is to represent a page as a bag of words and then to perform additional processing on such a flat representation. In this paper, we propose a new, hierarchical representation that includes browser screen coordinates for every HTML object on a page. Using visual information one is able to define heuristics for recognition of common page areas such as a header, left and right menu, footer and the centre of a page. Initial experiments have shown that, using our heuristics, defined areas are recognised properly in 73%; of cases. Finally, we introduce a classification system which, taking into account the proposed document layout analysis clearly outperforms standard systems by 10%; or more.

TL;DR: In this paper, a two-phase multi-criteria procedure is developed consisting of the layout generation phase and of the decision making phase for finding Pareto-optimal deck layout solutions subject to relevant constraints.
Abstract: This article presents the latest development of the multi-criteria layout concept design model for finding Pareto-optimal deck layout solutions subject to relevant constraints. Efficient spatial arrangement is crucial for ships having large number of people on board e.g. ro-pax, passenger or naval vessels. Conflicting design criteria may make the search for optimal layout difficult and time consuming. In this paper a two-phase multi-criteria procedure is developed consisting of the layout generation phase and of the decision making phase.

TL;DR: In this paper, the optimal layout design approach was used to solve problems related to site layout design of agricultural facilities such as refrigeration house, grading and packing house and warehouse, and a basic program to support the rational construction of such facilities using simulated Annealing (SA), one heuristic algorithm and one solution for combinatorial optimization problems, was coded in C language.
Abstract: In this study, optimal layout design approach was used to solve problems related to site layout design of agricultural facilities such as refrigeration house, grading and packing house and warehouse. A basic program to support the rational construction of such facilities using Simulated Annealing (SA), one heuristic algorithm and one solution for combinatorial optimization problems, was coded in C language (Satake(1999)). Layout design simulations were carried out to obtain information for the development of a program for solving practical problems. And, to clarify the feasibility of applying SA to the optimal layout design problems, the layout design simulation using the hill climbing (HC), which is another heuristic algorithm, was carried out for comparison with SA. As a result of the comparison with the optimum solution by HC, the value of cost evaluation by SA using exponential annealing was lower than that of hill climbing. Furthermore, in addition to this simulation, preliminary layout design simulation was also carried out to determine the applicability of the optimal layout design simulator to practical design. In this study, the layout design for a new building and parking was carried out. In the layout design, the site is not rectangular. As a result, the optimal design satisfying our condition was obtained.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a method for bookbinding processing (saddle stitching, side stitching or the like), an opening manner of a page (leftward or rightward opening, or a like) and a print target (a page executed with the printing, a printer sheet number, a page number, etc.) to improve the convenience when executing bookbinding and printing.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve convenience when executing bookbinding and printing, in a print data processor, a printer and a print data processing program, laying out a plurality of pages onto one printer sheet and executing the printing. SOLUTION: In a printing system 1, by designating a method for bookbinding processing (saddle stitching, side stitching or the like), an opening manner of a page (leftward or rightward opening, or the like) and a print target (a page executed with the printing, a printer sheet number or the like), only the printer sheet including the print target is executed with the printing with a proper page layout according to the method for the bookbinding processing and the opening manner of the page. Accordingly, even when one sheet of all the printer sheets bound as a booklet has a misprint, only the necessary printer sheet can be executed with the printing with the proper layout without sequentially executing the printing on all the printer sheets or all the printer sheets from an initial sheet to the sheet having the misprint, to improve the convenience when executing the bookbinding and printing.
