TL;DR: In this paper, a DC to DC Converter includes an electrical circuit that allows batteries and other electrical energy storage devices to be charged from or to discharge to a variable voltage DC bus.
Abstract: A DC to DC Converter includes an electrical circuit that allows batteries and other electrical energy storage devices to be charged from or to discharge to a variable voltage DC bus. This electrical circuit also enables seamless integration with other energy storage devices and/or DC power sources, such as fuel cells, to provide DC power for a Power Management System. A Power Management System preferably provides both full power source management and power conditioning. The Power Management System is able to manage power flow to and from multiple, isolated power sources and energy storage devices to deliver high quality alternating current (“AC”) power to a load.

TL;DR: In this article, active gate control techniques are introduced for flexibly and independently controlling the dv/dt and di/dt of insulated gate power devices during hard-switching events, which can maximize their compatibility with power module implementations that combine the power switch and its gate drive, including integrated circuit gate drives.
Abstract: Active gate control techniques are introduced in this paper for flexibly and independently controlling the dv/dt and di/dt of insulated gate power devices during hard-switching events. In the case of dv/dt control, the output voltage dv/dt can be controlled over a wide range by electronically adjusting the effective gate-to-drain (-collector) capacitance (i.e., Miller capacitance). For di/dt control, similar techniques are applied for electronically adjusting the output current di/dt over a wide range using voltage feedback from a small inductor connected in series with the switch's source (emitter) terminal. Both techniques are designed to maximize their compatibility with power module implementations that combine the power switch and its gate drive, including integrated circuit gate drives. Simulation and experimental results are included to verify the desirable performance characteristics of the presented dv/dt and di/dt control techniques.

TL;DR: In this paper, a simple and accurate method of computing conduction and switching loss is proposed for multi-level inverter system, which is proven for 3-level and 4-level diode clamped inverter systems.
Abstract: The multi-level inverter system is very promising in AC drives, when both reduced harmonic content and high power are required. But, as the output voltage level increase, the number of using the semiconductor device is increased. In case of multi-level inverter system, the loss of semiconductor devices cannot be analyzed by conventional methods. The reason is that the loss of each the semiconductor device is different from one another unlike 2-level and the diode clamped inverter system needs extra clamping diode. In this paper, a simple and accurate method of computing conduction and switching loss is proposed for multi-level inverter system. The validity of the proposed method is proven for 3-level and 4-level diode clamped inverter system.

TL;DR: In this paper, an apparatus and method for providing supplementary power to an electrical system of a vehicle or other machinery is described, where the power is supplied by a power source having the combination of high-density capacitor and battery.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for providing supplementary power to an electrical system of a vehicle or other machinery is provided. The apparatus and methods specifically provide a rapid-delivery of high amounts of power. The significant power levels are sufficient, for example, to turn the starter of a heavy-duty commercial transport vehicle stranded by a disabled battery. The power is supplied by a power source having the combination of high-density capacitor and battery. The power delivery is controlled to avoid such standard problems as reverse or same polarity connections and overvoltage. Control is effected by a combination voltage sensing circuit and isolation circuit to prevent current between the power source and the electrical system unless prescribed conditions are satisfied. The energy level of the power source is sustained by the capacitor-battery combination along with the capabilities to receive return charging from the electrical system as well as from alternating current and direct current sources.

Abstract: A modular uninterruptible power supply is presented having multiple power modules. Each power module contains an internal bypass circuit sized for its particular power module, and preferably to carry two per unit load. The system also includes internal control circuitry for each power module that control transitions between the inverter and bypass modes of operation. Both the high speed communication bus and a high level interrupt line are utilized to minimize the transfer break time between different modes of operation while ensuring that the inverter is never paralleled with the utility line voltage. To further minimize this transfer time, a solid state switching circuit is utilized to provide the initialization between operational modes. To maximize the efficiency during the bypass mode of operation, and electromechanical relay is utilized in coordinated operation with the solid state switching device to provide long-term power requirements during the bypass mode.

TL;DR: The fiber optic isolator as discussed by the authors was proposed to transport data signals between high voltage power lines and a communications interface device, bypassing a step-down transformer to low voltage power.
Abstract: The fiber optic isolator of the present invention transports data signals between high voltage power lines and a communications interface device, bypassing a step down transformer to low voltage power. The communication interface device includes a low voltage power line as well as telecommunications and wireless interfaces. The signals are coupled and de-coupled off of a high voltage power line by a power line coupler. Abstract: A dual-mode system for inexpensively operating electrically powered double-insulated devices (12), such as hand-held power tools and appliances. The system includes a cordless battery power module (14) that supplies the power and current demands of the device (12) in a cordless mode or a line power module (16) that supplies the necessary power and current demands in a physical envelope commensurate in size and interchangeable with that of the battery power module (14). The line power module (16) includes a chopper module (21) that is provided with a non-filtered high efficiency converter circuit that allows the chopper module (21) to generate the power and current required by the driven device (12). The inductance (22) of the motor (11) for the driven device (12) is used to filter the output of the chopper module (21). Eliminating the output filter from the chopper module (21) significantly reduces the cost and size of the line power module (16). TL;DR: In this article, a buck-boost chopper was used to start a microturbine using an external DC power source and/or an external AC power source, and the frequency and voltage levels of the AC power were gradually increased to accelerate the micro-turbines to startup speed.
Abstract: A power electrical system (37) is disclosed to connect a microturbine (12) and an electrical machine (14) to electrical power sources (18, 44) and a load (16). The invention permits the microturbine to be started using an external DC power source (18) and/or an external AC power source (44). DC power is converted to AC power by means of a buck-boost chopper (30), DC bus (24) and a DC-to-AC converter (42). AC power, from the AC power source, is converted to frequencies and voltages suitable to start a microturbine by a pair of DC-to-AC converters (42, 46) and the DC bus (24). The frequency and voltage levels of the AC power are gradually increased to accelerate the microturbine to startup speed. Once the microturbine is started, the external power sources are disconnected, and the DC bus and the DC-to-AC converters produce output AC power at a voltage level and frequency to match an electrical load.
