TL;DR: In this paper, an actuating assembly provided opposable movement of a clamp arm with respect to the cutting blade, the movement defining a vertical plane having a vertical axis (430) orthogonal to both the longitudinal axis (400) and a horizontal axis (440).
Abstract: Devices providing ultrasonic clamped cutting using asymmetrical motion include a housing (135) and ultrasonic waveguide (179). A longitudinal axis (400) extends through the center of mass of the ultrasonic waveguide (179). An actuating assembly provides opposable movement of a clamp arm (310) with respect to the cutting blade (178), the movement defining a vertical plane having a vertical axis (430) orthogonal to both the longitudinal axis (400) and a horizontal axis (440). An end-effector (185) coupled to the ultrasonic waveguide (179) includes a cutting blade (178) that cuts using ultrasonic motion. The blade's center of mass (500) may be offset from the longitudinal axis (400), providing motion of the blade in both the longitudinal and vertical axes concurrently. Excursion of the cutting blade (178) in the direction of the horizontal axis (440) that may be limited to less than 92%, and in the direction of the vertical axis (430) of more than 8%, of an excursion of the cutting blade (178) in the direction of the longitudinal axis (400).

Abstract: Kinematics of nominally periodic surf zone waves have been measured in the laboratory using LDA (laser Doppler anemometry), above trough level as well as below, for weakly plunging breakers transforming into bores in shallower water. The aim was to determine, through phase- or ensemble-averaging, periodic flow structures in a two-dimensional vertical plane, from large-scale down to small-scale vortical structures. Coherent multiple vortical structures were evident at the initiation of breaking, becoming elongated along the surface during bore propagation. The initial region is likely to become more extensive as waves become more strongly plunging and could explain the difference in turbulence characteristics between plunging and spilling breakers observed elsewhere

TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical description of the effects that the main instrumental variables and measurement parameters have on the reconstruction accuracy of any point on the surface of the object being imaged was undertaken.
Abstract: An investigation was carried out concerning the traceability of dimensional measurements performed with the scanning electron microscope (SEM) using reconstruction of surface topography through stereo-photogrammetry. A theoretical description of the effects that the main instrumental variables and measurement parameters have on the reconstruction accuracy of any point on the surface of the object being imaged was undertaken. This description was based on the model function introduced by Piazzesi adapted for eucentrically tilted stereo-pairs. An analysis of the sensitivity coefficients for the vertical elevation model has identified the most important instrumental variables and measurement parameters to be the tilt angle and the magnification calibration. An equation describing the theoretically determined uncertainty of the vertical elevation was produced. An experimental investigation was carried out involving: (i) magnification calibration using a steel scale with 50 μm pitch at low magnifications, and a 2D calibration grating with 2.120 μm pitch at high magnifications; (ii) tilt angle calibration by laser interferometry; (iii) vertical elevation calibration using gauge-block steps; (iv) calibration in the vertical plane using two ISO 5436 type C roughness standards. Results from magnification calibration and tilt angle measurement were used for calculating the theoretical uncertainty on the vertical elevation. Experimental deviations measured on gauge-block steps showed slightly bigger values than those calculated from the theoretical model. Lateral measurement on the reconstructed three-dimensional topography of the type C roughness standards showed good agreement with the nominal profile wavelength values.

TL;DR: In this paper, the results of tests using the IEEE test set-up with both vertical and horizontal electrodes are given, and the incident energy values are shown to depend on the size of the trigger fuse wire used.
Abstract: The arc flash hazard calculation method proposed in IEEE 1584 is based on tests with the arcing electrodes in a vertical plane and the calorimeters arranged at 90/spl deg/ to this plane. In this paper the results of tests using the IEEE test set-up with both vertical and horizontal electrodes are given. High-speed videography and incident energy measurements show that the arc flash hazard is much worse with the horizontal orientation. However current-limiting fuses are effective in limiting the incident energy, even in worst-case arcing conditions, provided that the bolted-fault current is high enough to cause them to operate in their current-limiting mode. The incident energy values are shown to depend on the size of the trigger fuse wire used. The effect of phase imbalance is also considered.

TL;DR: In this paper, a cylindrical lens extends generally in a width direction of a vehicle, and light from three light-emitting elements, rearward of a rear focal line of the lens, is reflected forward by three reflectors.
Abstract: A cylindrical lens extends generally in a width direction of a vehicle, and light from three light-emitting elements, rearward of a rear focal line of the cylindrical lens, is reflected forward by three reflectors. A reflecting surface of each reflector has an elliptical vertical cross-sectional shape in a vertical plane perpendicular to the rear focal line. The first focus is at a center of light-emission of the corresponding light-emitting element, while the second focus lies at a point in the vicinity of the rear focal line. The rate of utilization of light flux from each light-emitting element is enhanced, and a luminous distribution patter having a relatively small width in an upward-downward orientation is formed. When the cylindrical lens and each reflector are deviated from their respective proper positions in the direction of the width of the vehicle, the luminous distribution patter of a constant shape can be formed.

TL;DR: The final concepts for clinical application in the classic deep pedicle V-Y flap design are to calculate the length of the V by modifying the alpha angle and to move the pivot plane deeper to accomplish optimal flap movement.
Abstract: Background Geometry is fundamental in the comprehension of local flap design. The purpose of this study was to discuss the differences between the V-Y advancement flap and other local flaps, understand its geometry, and analyze its clinical applications. Methods The analysis was based on qualitative measurements of an injury, taking into consideration the following dimensions: largest diameter, shortest diameter, and depth. Standardization of the flap design consisted of directing its advancement over the shortest diameter and making the V base match the size of the largest diameter. The flap was analyzed in two planes: the horizontal plane includes the V-Y design and the vertical plane includes the flap pedicle. The height of the flap can be obtained by simple trigonometry, taking into consideration the largest diameter and alpha angle in the horizontal plane. In the vertical plane, where the pedicle and pivot plane are positioned, for known shortest diameter and depth, the final depth of the pivot plane can be calculated using Pythagoras' principles. Results This analysis was applied to 25 patients with adequate skin coverage at follow-up. A correction factor was added to reduce the overdeepening of the vertical plane calculations. The final concepts for clinical application in the classic deep pedicle V-Y flap design are to calculate the length of the V by modifying the alpha angle and to move the pivot plane deeper to accomplish optimal flap movement. Conclusions Using these principles, tension-free closure of the Y and appropriate advancement of the flap are obtained.

TL;DR: In this paper, a patch array antenna for mobile satellite communications aiming at ETS-VIII applications has been developed and the ground plane size effects on the antenna characteristics were investigated.
Abstract: In this research, a patch array antenna for mobile satellite communications aiming at ETS-VIII applications has been developed. The ground plane size effects on the antenna characteristics were investigated. Finite and infinite ground planes were analysed by the finite integration technique (FIT) for time domain analysis, the finite element method (FEM) and the method of moments (MoM) for spectral domain analysis. Then measurements of the fabricated antenna were performed to confirm the analysis results. It is clear that the frequency characteristics of the axial ratio are influenced by the variation in the ground plane size. When the ground plane size is increased, the edge-diffracted field causes tilting of the beam in the direction of low elevation angles and causes a decrease in the maximum gain and in the 3 dB-beamwidth of axial ratio in the elevation plane. In the conical-cut direction, an increase in ground plane size induces a decrease in the 3 dB-beamwidth of axial ratio for FEM, but shows the opposite result for FIT and measurement. In addition, an increase in ground plane size also induces increases in maximum gain and its 6 dBic-beamwidth along with a shift in the maximum gain in the direction of low azimuth angle. Abstract: A method and system for generating three-dimensional antenna patterns from two-dimensional cross sections. The method involves an estimate (1006), on a given vertical plane, obtained by rotating a gain value (1010) from the front of the vertical pattern using the horizontal pattern (1004) as a weight; a second estimate, which could be on a separate vertical plane, obtained by rotating a gain value (1014) from the back of the vertical pattern, and a final estimate (1206) obtained by connecting the first two estimates across their respective planes. The invention yields smooth reasonable surfaces (1704) that satisfy the vertical and horizontal boundary conditions, exhibits no mathematical artifacts, and improves the accuracy of propagation calculations of radio frequency signals. The method is implemented in a software system (1812) that provides interactive analysis and visualization capabilities for antenna patterns in three dimensions.

Abstract: The utility model provides a parameter regulatable hammer blow device along with welding. A platform is supported by a post, and an axis element is clamped and processed by a clamping chuck. The platform is connected with an air hammer through a cramping apparatus, and the air hammer is connected with an oil-water separator and an air compressor through a gas valve. TL;DR: In this article, a wireless transceiver within a wireless device can be used to simulate the function of a level and a reference plane can be added to the housing for proper level operation.
Abstract: An integrated level ( 10 ) in a wireless device ( 11 ) can include a wireless transceiver within a housing ( 13 ), a processor ( 19 ) coupled to the wireless transceiver, a presentation device such as a display ( 12 ) or speaker ( 17 ) coupled to the processor, and an accelerometer ( 18 ) coupled to the processor where the display can serve to visually simulate the function of a level. The integrated level can further include a reference plane ( 15 ) added to the housing for proper level operation. By orienting the housing and the reference plane over a measurement plane ( 20 ), a determination of a deviation from a vertical plane or a horizontal plane can become apparent on the display. The display of the integrated level can provide a graphic user interface with a simulated level having a three segmented vertical bubble representation ( 16 ) and a three segmented horizontal bubble representation ( 14 ).

TL;DR: It is observed that the effects of the horizontal distance of objects to be lifted on human lifting postural angles for the four assessed lifting types mainly occurred in the upper extremities.
Abstract: This study recruited eleven healthy males and thirteen healthy females to examine their maximum two-handed isometric back lifting strength, upper-body lifting strength, arm lifting strength and shoulder lifting strength in three different horizontal distances of objects to be lifted (toes were anterior to, aligned with, and posterior to the exerted handle). The results showed that human lifting strength decreased significantly as the toe position shifted from anterior of the vertical plane of the exerted handle to posterior of the vertical plane of the exerted handle. The strength order relationship between back lifting strength and upper-body lifting strength was dependent on the horizontal distance of objects to be lifted. This study also observed that the effects of the horizontal distance of objects to be lifted on human lifting postural angles for the four assessed lifting types mainly occurred in the upper extremities. This study recommends that practitioners should not overlook the effects of the horizontal distance of objects to be lifted on lifting strength when evaluating workers' lifting strength for screening purposes.

TL;DR: In this paper, a simple 3D-SLIP model for running is analyzed and an explicit approximate stride-to-stride mapping is derived for all left-right symmetric gaits.
Abstract: We analyze a simple three-dimensional model for running: the spring-loaded inverted pendulum (3D-SLIP). Our formulation reduces to the vertical plane (SLIP) and horizontal plane lateral leg spring (LLS) models in the appropriate limits. Using the geometry and symmetries intrinsic to the system, we derive an explicit approximate stride-to-stride mapping and show that all left-right symmetric gaits are unstable. Continuation to fixed points for the ‘exact’ mapping confirms instability, and we describe a simple feedback control of leg placement at touchdown that stabilizes them.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reinforcing method of a single arrangement existing foundation for a low-rise housing capable of contributing reinforcement by additional work to shear strength reinforcement of the whole foundation without being damaged in the existing foundation itself. SOLUTION: An additional reinforcing bar assembly body 6 consisting of a reinforcing vertical bar 4 located in one vertical plane at an interval in the longitudinal direction and a sash bar material 5 for connecting the reinforcing vertical bar is fitted to a rise surface 3a of a single arrangement existing RC foundation 3 for the low-rise housing reinforced by a main bar 1 extended in the longitudinal direction while locating in one vertical plane at an interval in the vertical direction and a vertical bar 2 placed at an interval in the longitudinal direction for connecting the main bar. A polymer cement mortar 7 is applied to the foundation rise surface 3a so that the reinforcing bar assembly body can not be exposed, the foundation is widened and, at the same time, shear strength can be increased. Construction work can be very easily finished within a short period of time, and cost reduction of work can be promoted. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI

TL;DR: In this article, a multibeam VHF radar experiment was carried out to explore the mesoscale convective systems over Gadanki (13.5°N, 79.2°E), which revealed an interesting pattern in the height horizontal distance section of radar reflectivity.
Abstract: [1] A multibeam VHF radar experiment, which was carried out to explore the mesoscale convective systems over Gadanki (13.5°N, 79.2°E), is discussed. These observations revealed an interesting pattern in the height horizontal distance section of radar reflectivity. A weak echo region (WER) is observed in the height region of ∼8–14 km well above the melting layer, which is believed to be first of its kind in VHF radar observations. A single vertical velocity core of ∼7 km vertical extent with ∼10 ms−1 vertical velocity is observed and it has been noticed that the WER is forming in the peripheral region of large vertical velocities. An attempt has been made to explain the plausible mechanism responsible for the formation of WERs. Significance of present results lies in showing the capability of VHF radar to scan the convective system in vertical plane and in providing observational evidence for existence of WER above the melting level.

TL;DR: In this article, the vertical divergence of the 170-kV photons and the distance of the source-point to the scintillator were calculated to calculate precisely the vertical electron beamsize at this sourcepoint.
Abstract: The un-used X-rays produced in each of the 64 ESRF dipoles are absorbed in so-called crotch absorbers at the end of the dipole. With 40mm of Copper + 5mm of Steel only 250uW/mrad (out of total power fan of 154W/mrad) traverse the absorber. About 20% of these ~170KeV energy X-rays are converted by a 0.5mm thick Cadmium Tungstenate (CdWO4) scintillator into visible light that is collected and focussed by simple optics on to a commercial CCD camera. This compact monitor operates in air and is situated just behind the crotch chamber. Knowing the small vertical divergence of the 170KeV photons and the distance of the source-point to the scintillator, it possible to calculate precisely the vertical electron beamsize at this sourcepoint. The light yield is enough to measure at >1KHz frequency, with a submicro-meter resolution of the beam position, thereby also constituting a powerful tool for beam stability measurement in the vertical plane. The principle, the practical realisation and the results obtained with a prototype since Jan.2005 will be presented.
