Journal ArticleDOI
Allostery and intrinsic disorder mediate transcription regulation by conditional cooperativity.
Abel Garcia-Pino,Sreeram Balasubramanian,Lode Wyns,Ehud Gazit,Henri De Greve,Roy Rd Magnuson,Daniel Charlier,Nico A. J. van Nuland,Remy Loris +8 more
TL;DR: The experiments provide the basis for understanding the mechanism of conditional cooperative regulation of transcription typical of toxin-antitoxin modules and may be applicable for the regulation of other biological systems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reassessing the Role of Type II Toxin-Antitoxin Systems in Formation of Escherichia coli Type II Persister Cells
Frédéric Goormaghtigh,Nathan Fraikin,Marta Putrinš,Thibaut Hallaert,Vasili Hauryliuk,Vasili Hauryliuk,Abel Garcia-Pino,Andreas Sjödin,Andreas Sjödin,Sergo Kasvandik,Klas I. Udekwu,Tanel Tenson,Niilo Kaldalu,Laurence Van Melderen +13 more
TL;DR: The roles of TA modules in persistence are reassessed both at the population and single-cell levels and it is shown that there is no direct link between induction of TA systems and persistence to antibiotics.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Fic protein Doc uses an inverted substrate to phosphorylate and inactivate EF-Tu
Daniel Castro-Roa,Abel Garcia-Pino,Steven De Gieter,Nico A. J. van Nuland,Remy Loris,Nikolay Zenkin +5 more
TL;DR: It is shown that Doc is a new type of kinase that inhibits bacterial translation by phosphorylating the conserved threonine (Thr382) of the translation elongation factor EF-Tu, rendering it unable to bind aminoacylated tRNAs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rejuvenation of CcdB-Poisoned Gyrase by an Intrinsically Disordered Protein Domain
Natalie De Jonge,Abel Garcia-Pino,Lieven Buts,Sarah Haesaerts,Daniel Charlier,Klaus Zangger,Lode Wyns,Henri De Greve,Remy Loris +8 more
TL;DR: It is shown that CcdA binds consecutively to two partially overlapping sites on CcdB, which differ in affinity by six orders of magnitude, which regulates expression of the ccd operon.
Journal ArticleDOI
SbsB structure and lattice reconstruction unveil Ca2+ triggered S-layer assembly.
Ekaterina Baranova,Rémi Fronzes,Rémi Fronzes,Abel Garcia-Pino,Nani Van Gerven,David Papapostolou,Gérard Pehau-Arnaudet,Els Pardon,Jan Steyaert,Stefan Howorka,Han Remaut +10 more
TL;DR: The SbsB lattice represents a previously undescribed structural model for protein assemblies and may advance the understanding of SLP physiology and self-assembly, as well as the rational design of engineered higher-order structures for biotechnology.
