Journal ArticleDOI
Association between insertion mutation in NOD2 gene and Crohn's disease in German and British populations
Jochen Hampe,Andrew P. Cuthbert,Peter J. P. Croucher,Muddassar M. Mirza,Silvia Mascheretti,Sheila A. Fisher,Henning Frenzel,Katherine S. King,Anja Hasselmeyer,Andrew J. Macpherson,Stephen Bridger,Sander J. H. van Deventer,Alastair Forbes,Susanna Nikolaus,John E. Lennard-Jones,Ulrich R. Foelsch,Michael Krawczak,Cathryn M. Lewis,Stefan Schreiber,Christopher G. Mathew +19 more
TL;DR: The insertion mutation in the NOD2 gene confers a substantially increased susceptibility to Crohn's disease but not to ulcerative colitis.
Journal ArticleDOI
The contribution of NOD2 gene mutations to the risk and site of disease in inflammatory bowel disease
Andrew P. Cuthbert,Sheila A. Fisher,Muddassar M. Mirza,Katherine S. King,Jochen Hampe,Peter J. P. Croucher,Silvia Mascheretti,Jeremy D. Sanderson,Alastair Forbes,John C. Mansfield,Stefan Schreiber,Cathryn M. Lewis,Christopher G. Mathew +12 more
TL;DR: The R702W, G908R, and 3020insC mutations are strong independent risk factors for CD and are associated particularly with ileal disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
SURF1, encoding a factor involved in the biogenesis of cytochrome c oxidase, is mutated in Leigh syndrome.
Zhiqing Zhu,Jianbo Yao,T.A. Johns,Katherine Fu,I. De Bie,C. Macmillan,Andrew P. Cuthbert,Robert F. Newbold,J.-C. Wang,Mario Chevrette,Garry K. Brown,Ruth M. Brown,Eric A. Shoubridge,Eric A. Shoubridge +13 more
TL;DR: Analysis of a candidate gene (SURF1) of unknown function revealed several mutations that suggest a role for SURF1 in the biogenesis of the COX complex and define a new class of gene defects causing human neurodegenerative disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Angelina Jolie effect: how high celebrity profile can have a major impact on provision of cancer related services.
D. Gareth Evans,Julian Barwell,Diana Eccles,Amanda L. Collins,Louise Izatt,Chris Jacobs,Alan Donaldson,Angela F. Brady,Andrew P. Cuthbert,Rachel Harrison,Sue Thomas,Anthony Howell,Zosia Miedzybrodzka,Alex Murray +13 more
TL;DR: The Angelina Jolie effect has been long lasting and global, and appears to have increased referrals to centres appropriately and there was no increase in inappropriate referrals.
Journal Article
Telomere length abnormalities in mammalian radiosensitive cells.
Joanne M. McIlrath,Simon Bouffler,Enrique Samper,Andrew P. Cuthbert,Andrzej Wojcik,Irena Szumiel,Peter E. Bryant,Andrew Riches,Alastair M. Thompson,Maria A. Blasco,Robert F. Newbold,Predrag Slijepcevic +11 more
TL;DR: A significant inverse correlation between telomere length and chromosomal radiosensitivity was observed in lymphocytes from 24 breast cancer patients and 5 normal individuals and suggest that these two phenotypes may be linked.
