Journal ArticleDOI
Human hippocampal neurogenesis drops sharply in children to undetectable levels in adults
Shawn F. Sorrells,Mercedes F. Paredes,Arantxa Cebrián-Silla,Kadellyn Sandoval,Dashi Qi,Kevin W. Kelley,David James,Simone Mayer,Julia W. Chang,Kurtis I. Auguste,Edward F. Chang,Antonio Gutierrez,Arnold R. Kriegstein,Gary W. Mathern,Michael C. Oldham,Eric J. Huang,José Manuel García-Verdugo,Zhengang Yang,Arturo Alvarez-Buylla +18 more
TL;DR: It is shown that a defined population of progenitor cells does not coalesce in the subgranular zone during human fetal or postnatal development, and that neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus does not continue, or is extremely rare, in adult humans.
Journal ArticleDOI
Adult Neurogenesis Is Sustained by Symmetric Self-Renewal and Differentiation.
Kirsten Obernier,Arantxa Cebrián-Silla,Matt Thomson,Matt Thomson,Jose I. Parraguez,Rio Anderson,Cristina D. Guinto,José Rodas Rodriguez,José Manuel García-Verdugo,Arturo Alvarez-Buylla +9 more
TL;DR: It is shown that the vast majority of B1 cells divide symmetrically, and limited rounds of symmetric self-renewal and consuming symmetric differentiation divisions can explain the levels of neurogenesis observed throughout life.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vascular-derived TGF-β increases in the stem cell niche and perturbs neurogenesis during aging and following irradiation in the adult mouse brain
Jose R. Pineda,Mathieu Daynac,Alexandra Chicheportiche,Arantxa Cebrián-Silla,Karine Sii Felice,José Manuel García-Verdugo,François D. Boussin,Marc-André Mouthon +7 more
TL;DR: The blockade of TGF‐β signalling in vivo using a neutralizing antibody or the selective inhibitor SB‐505124 significantly improved neurogenesis in aged and irradiated mice, prevented apoptosis and increased the proliferation of neural stem/progenitor cells, suggesting that anti‐TGF‐ β‐based therapy may be used for future interventions to prevent neurogenic collapse following radiotherapy or during aging.
Journal ArticleDOI
Axonal Control of the Adult Neural Stem Cell Niche
Cheuk Ka Tong,Jiadong Chen,Arantxa Cebrián-Silla,Zaman Mirzadeh,Kirsten Obernier,Cristina D. Guinto,Laurence H. Tecott,José Manuel García-Verdugo,Arnold R. Kriegstein,Arturo Alvarez-Buylla +9 more
TL;DR: It is shown that serotonergic (5HT) axons originating from a small group of neurons in the raphe form an extensive plexus on most of the ventricular walls of the adult brain and directly interact with NSCs to regulate neurogenesis via 5HT2C.
Journal ArticleDOI
