Journal ArticleDOI
Structure-property relationships of a biological mesocrystal in the adult sea urchin spine
Jong Seto,Yurong Ma,Sean A. Davis,Fiona C. Meldrum,Aurélien Gourrier,Yi-Yeoun Kim,Uwe Schilde,Michael Sztucki,Manfred Burghammer,Sergey Maltsev,Christian Jäger,Helmut Cölfen +11 more
TL;DR: A comprehensive analysis of an adult sea urchin spine is presented, and in revealing a complex, hierarchical structure, it is shown how Nature fabricates a material which diffracts as a single crystal of calcite and yet fractures as a glassy material.
Journal ArticleDOI
Spiral twisting of fiber orientation inside bone lamellae
Wolfgang Wagermaier,Himadri S. Gupta,Aurélien Gourrier,Manfred Burghammer,Paul Roschger,Peter Fratzl +5 more
TL;DR: Using scanning x-ray diffraction with a micron-sized synchrotron beam, along with measurements of local mineral crystallographic axis direction, it is found that the mineralized collagen fibrils spiral around the central axis with varying degrees of tilt, which would impart high extensibility to the osteon.
Journal ArticleDOI
Emerging Approaches in Synchrotron Studies of Materials from Cultural and Natural History Collections
Loïc Bertrand,Sylvain Bernard,Federica Marone,Mathieu Thoury,Ina Reiche,Aurélien Gourrier,Aurélien Gourrier,Aurélien Gourrier,Philippe Sciau,Uwe Bergmann +9 more
TL;DR: High-definition (spectral) imaging appears as the main driving force of the current trend for new synchrotron techniques for research on cultural and natural heritage materials.
Journal ArticleDOI
Combination of Nanoindentation and Quantitative Backscattered Electron Imaging Revealed Altered Bone Material Properties Associated with Femoral Neck Fragility
Nadja Fratzl-Zelman,Paul Roschger,Aurélien Gourrier,M Weber,Barbara M. Misof,Nigel Loveridge,Jonathan Reeve,Klaus Klaushofer,Peter Fratzl +8 more
TL;DR: It appears that the observed femoral neck fragility is associated with a reduced mineral content, which was not accompanied by a reduction in stiffness and hardness of the bone material.
Journal ArticleDOI
Scanning texture analysis of lamellar bone using microbeam synchrotron X-ray radiation
Wolfgang Wagermaier,Himadri S. Gupta,Aurélien Gourrier,Oskar Paris,Paul Roschger,Manfred Burghammer,Christian Riekel,Peter Fratzl +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, a combination of microbeam synchrotron X-ray texture analysis with thin sections of osteonal bone is used to measure the three-dimensional distribution of the c-axis orientation of the mineral apatite in bone with positional resolution of 1'µm.
