Journal ArticleDOI
Leukocyte telomere length and ideal cardiovascular health in American Indians: the Strong Heart Family Study.
Hao Peng,Hao Peng,Mihriye Mete,Sameer Desale,Amanda M. Fretts,Shelley A. Cole,Lyle G. Best,Jue Lin,Elizabeth H. Blackburn,Elisa T. Lee,Barbara V. Howard,Jinying Zhao,Jinying Zhao +12 more
TL;DR: American Indians achieved lower rates for five out of the seven ideal CVH metrics, including smoking, BMI, physical activity, diet, and blood pressure, compared to the U.S. general population, which suggests that achieving an idealCVH may prevent or delay CVD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relationship between plasma plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 and hypertension in American Indians: findings from the Strong Heart Study.
Hao Peng,Fawn Yeh,Giovanni de Simone,Lyle G. Best,Elisa T. Lee,Barbara V. Howard,Jinying Zhao +6 more
TL;DR: A higher level of plasma PAI-1 is significantly associated with hypertension in American Indians, independent of established risk factors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Variants in CPT1A, FADS1, and FADS2 are Associated with Higher Levels of Estimated Plasma and Erythrocyte Delta-5 Desaturases in Alaskan Eskimos
V. Saroja Voruganti,Paul B. Higgins,Sven O. E. Ebbesson,John M. Kennish,Harald H H Göring,Karin Haack,Sandra Laston,Eugene Drigalenko,Charlotte R. Wenger,William S. Harris,Richard R. Fabsitz,Richard B. Devereux,Jean W. MacCluer,Joanne E. Curran,Melanie A. Carless,Matthew P. Johnson,Eric K. Moses,Eric K. Moses,John Blangero,Jason G. Umans,Barbara V. Howard,Shelley A. Cole,Anthony G. Comuzzie +22 more
TL;DR: Findings strongly suggest a functional role for FADS1, FADS2, and CPT1A SNPs in the variation in eD5D activity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Associations of postmenopausal hormone therapy with markers of hemostasis and inflammation and lipid profiles in diabetic and nondiabetic american Indian women: the strong heart study.
Ying Zhang,Barbara V. Howard,Linda D. Cowan,Thomas K. Welty,Carl F. Schaefer,Robert A. Wild,Jeunliang Yeh,Elisa T. Lee +7 more
TL;DR: In American Indian women without diabetes, PHT was associated with lower levels of hemostatic markers but higher levels of an inflammatory marker, and data provide an additional rationale for considering diabetes status when deciding whether or not to use PHT.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of dietary sodium and potassium intake on left ventricular diastolic function and mass in adults≤40 years (from the Strong Heart Study).
Bernhard Haring,Wenyu Wang,Elisa T. Lee,Sunny Jhamnani,Barbara V. Howard,Richard B. Devereux +5 more
TL;DR: An increase in dietary sodium/potassium ratio was related to an accentuation of atrial phase LV diastolic filling in normotensive young subjects, whereas in prehypertensive or hypertensive subjects it was associated with higher LV mass index.
