Journal ArticleDOI
An 800-million-solar-mass black hole in a significantly neutral Universe at a redshift of 7.5
Eduardo Bañados,Bram Venemans,Chiara Mazzucchelli,Emanuele Paolo Farina,Fabian Walter,Feige Wang,Roberto Decarli,Roberto Decarli,Daniel Stern,Xiaohui Fan,Frederick B. Davies,Joseph F. Hennawi,Robert A. Simcoe,Monica L. Turner,Monica L. Turner,Hans-Walter Rix,Jinyi Yang,Daniel D. Kelson,Gwen C. Rudie,Jan Martin Winters +19 more
TL;DR: Strong evidence of absorption of the spectrum of the quasar redwards of the Lyman α emission line (the Gunn–Peterson damping wing), as would be expected if a significant amount of the hydrogen in the intergalactic medium surrounding J1342 + 0928 is neutral, and a significant fraction of neutral hydrogen is derived, although the exact fraction depends on the modelling.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Pan-STARRS1 Distant z > 5.6 Quasar Survey: More than 100 Quasars within the First Gyr of the Universe
Eduardo Bañados,Eduardo Bañados,Bram Venemans,Roberto Decarli,Emanuele Paolo Farina,Chiara Mazzucchelli,Frederick M. Walter,Xiaohui Fan,Daniel Stern,Edward F. Schlafly,Edward F. Schlafly,K. C. Chambers,H-W. Rix,Linhua Jiang,Ian D. McGreer,R. Simcoe,Feige Wang,Feige Wang,Jing Yang,Jing Yang,Eric Morganson,G. De Rosa,Jochen Greiner,Mislav Baloković,William S. Burgett,T. Cooper,Peter W. Wainscoat,Christopher Waters,Qian Yang,Qian Yang +40 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the Leibniz Prize (DFG) was used for the first time to evaluate the performance of the NSF Telescope System Instrumentation Program (TSIP).
Journal ArticleDOI
Physical Properties of 15 Quasars at z ≳ 6.5
Chiara Mazzucchelli,Eduardo Bañados,Eduardo Bañados,Bram Venemans,Roberto Decarli,Emanuele Paolo Farina,Fabian Walter,Anna-Christina Eilers,Hans-Walter Rix,Robert A. Kudritzki,Eugene A. Magnier,Nigel Metcalfe,Christopher Waters,Richard J. Wainscoat +25 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed the Cosmic Dawn project, which used the ESO Telescopes at the La Silla Paranal Observatory (ESO-Paral Observatory).
Journal ArticleDOI
An ALMA [C II] Survey of 27 Quasars at z > 5.94
Roberto Decarli,Roberto Decarli,Fabian Walter,Fabian Walter,Fabian Walter,Bram Venemans,Eduardo Bañados,Frank Bertoldi,Chris Carilli,Chris Carilli,Xiaohui Fan,Emanuele Paolo Farina,Chiara Mazzucchelli,Dominik Riechers,Hans-Walter Rix,Michael A. Strauss,Ran Wang,Yujin Yang +17 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented a survey of the [C II] 158 μm line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) dust continuum emission in a sample of 27 z ≳ 6 quasars using the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) at 1^" resolution.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rapidly star-forming galaxies adjacent to quasars at redshifts exceeding 6
Roberto Decarli,Fabian Walter,Fabian Walter,Fabian Walter,Bram Venemans,Eduardo Bañados,F. Bertoldi,Chris L. Carilli,Chris L. Carilli,Xiaohui Fan,Emanuele Paolo Farina,Chiara Mazzucchelli,Dominik Riechers,H. W. Rix,Michael A. Strauss,Ran Wang,Yujin Yang +16 more
TL;DR: Observations of an emission line of singly ionized carbon in four galaxies at z > 6 that are companions of quasars and estimate star-formation rates in the companions of more than 100 solar masses per year, which can account for the population of massive elliptical galaxies in terms of the density of cosmic space.
