Journal ArticleDOI
Antibiotic resistance in European wastewater treatment plants mirrors the pattern of clinical antibiotic resistance prevalence
Katariina Pärnänen,Carlos Narciso-da-Rocha,David Kneis,Thomas U. Berendonk,Damiano Cacace,Thi Thuy Do,Christian Elpers,Despo Fatta-Kassinos,Isabel Henriques,Thomas Jaeger,Antti Karkman,José L. Martínez,Stella Michael,I. Michael-Kordatou,Kristin O'Sullivan,Sara Rodríguez-Mozaz,Thomas Schwartz,Hongjie Sheng,Hongjie Sheng,Henning Sørum,Robert D. Stedtfeld,James M. Tiedje,Saulo Varela Della Giustina,Fiona Walsh,Ivone Vaz-Moreira,Marko Virta,Célia M. Manaia +26 more
TL;DR: This first trans-Europe surveillance showed that UWTP AR profiles mirror the AR gradient observed in clinics, and the need to implement regular surveillance and control measures, which may need to be appropriate for the geographic regions, is highlighted.
Journal ArticleDOI
Antibiotic residues in final effluents of European wastewater treatment plants and their impact on the aquatic environment
Sara Rodríguez-Mozaz,Ivone Vaz-Moreira,Saulo Varela Della Giustina,Marta Llorca,Damià Barceló,Sara Schubert,Thomas U. Berendonk,I. Michael-Kordatou,Despo Fatta-Kassinos,José L. Martínez,Christian Elpers,Isabel Henriques,Thomas Jaeger,Thomas Schwartz,Erik Paulshus,Kristin O'Sullivan,Katariina Pärnänen,Marko Virta,Thi Thuy Do,Fiona Walsh,Célia M. Manaia +20 more
TL;DR: Three compounds, ciprofloxacin, azithromycin and cefalexin are proposed as markers of antibiotic pollution, as they could occasionally pose a risk to the environment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reduction of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria During Conventional and Advanced Wastewater Treatment, and the Disseminated Loads Released to the Environment.
Thomas Jäger,Norman Hembach,Christian Elpers,Arne Wieland,Johannes Alexander,Christian Hiller,Gerhard Krauter,Thomas Schwartz +7 more
TL;DR: The dimerization or potential other DNA alterations during UV treatment might be responsible for a decreased PCR efficiency of the 16S rRNA amplicons from natural metagenomes compared to the untreated sample and this impact on PCR efficiencies was also observed for the combination of ozone and UV treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
The motor system is exceptionally vulnerable to absence of the ubiquitously expressed superoxide dismutase-1
Julien H. Park,Ulrika Nordström,Konstantinos Tsiakas,Işıl Keskin,Christian Elpers,Manoj Mannil,Raoul Heller,Melinda Nolan,Salam Alburaiky,Per Zetterström,Maja Hempel,Ulrike Schara-Schmidt,Saskia Biskup,Petra Steinacker,Markus Otto,Jochen H. Weishaupt,Andreas Hahn,René Santer,Thorsten Marquardt,Stefan L. Marklund,Peter Andersen +20 more
TL;DR: In this article , the authors explored the bodily effects of superoxide dismutase-1 enzymatic deficiency in eight children homozygous for the p.C112Wfs*11 truncating mutation.
