Journal ArticleDOI
Immunomodulatory function of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells in experimental autoimmune type 1 diabetes.
Paolo Fiorina,Mollie Jurewicz,Andrea Augello,Andrea Vergani,Shirine Dada,Stefano La Rosa,Martin K. Selig,Jonathan G. Godwin,Kenneth Law,Claudia Placidi,R. Neal Smith,Carlo Capella,Scott J. Rodig,Chaker N. Adra,Mark A. Atkinson,Mohamed H. Sayegh,Reza Abdi +16 more
TL;DR: Bone marrow-derived murine MSC is characterized for their ability to modulate immune responses in the context of type 1 diabetes, as represented in NOD mice, to provide important preclinical data supporting the basis for further development of allogeneic MSC-based therapies for T1D and, potentially, for other autoimmune disorders.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pancreatic islet amyloidosis, β-cell apoptosis, and α-cell proliferation are determinants of islet remodeling in type-2 diabetic baboons
Rodolfo Guardado-Mendoza,Alberto M. Davalli,Alberto O. Chavez,Gene B. Hubbard,Edward J. Dick,Abraham Majluf-Cruz,Carlos Enrique Tene-Pérez,Lukasz Goldschmidt,John Hart,Carla Perego,Anthony G. Comuzzie,Maria Elizabeth Tejero,Giovanna Finzi,Claudia Placidi,Stefano La Rosa,Carlo Capella,Glenn A. Halff,Amalia Gastaldelli,Ralph A. DeFronzo,Franco Folli +19 more
TL;DR: The results strongly support the concept that IA and β-cell apoptosis in concert with α-cell proliferation and hypertrophy are key determinants of islets of Langerhans “dysfunctional remodeling” and hyperglycemia in the baboon, a nonhuman primate model of type-2 diabetes mellitus.
Journal ArticleDOI
Natural history of kidney graft survival, hypertrophy, and vascular function in end-stage renal disease type 1 diabetic kidney-transplanted patients: beneficial impact of pancreas and successful islet cotransplantation.
Paolo Fiorina,Massimo Venturini,Franco Folli,Claudio Losio,Paola Maffi,Claudia Placidi,Stefano La Rosa,Elena Orsenigo,Carlo Socci,Carlo Capella,Alessandro Del Maschio,Antonio Secchi +11 more
TL;DR: In ESRD type 1 diabetic patients, KP and KI-s compared with KD resulted in enhanced kidney graft survival, hypertrophy, and vascular function.
Journal ArticleDOI
Altered insulin receptor signalling and β-cell cycle dynamics in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Franco Folli,Terumasa Okada,Carla Perego,Jenny E. Gunton,Chong Wee Liew,Masaru Akiyama,Anna D’Amico,Stefano La Rosa,Claudia Placidi,Roberto Lupi,Piero Marchetti,Giorgio Sesti,Marc K. Hellerstein,Lucia Perego,Rohit N. Kulkarni +14 more
TL;DR: Evidence is provided that human β- and α-cells can enter the cell-cycle, but proliferation of β-cells in T2DM fails due to G1-to-S phase arrest secondary to defective insulin signaling, suggesting a role for insulin-signaling in β-cell growth.
Journal ArticleDOI
TTF1 expression in normal lung neuroendocrine cells and related tumors: immunohistochemical study comparing two different monoclonal antibodies
Stefano La Rosa,Anna Maria Chiaravalli,Claudia Placidi,Nikolaos Papanikolaou,Michele Cerati,Carlo Capella +5 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that the SPT24 antibody is more sensitive than the 8G7G3/1 clone for labeling lung carcinoids and it appears particularly useful in detecting peripheral neoplasms.
