Genetic association between schizophrenia and the DISC1 gene in the Scottish population
TL;DR: Genotyping multiple SNP and microsatellite markers in a large Scottish case‐control sample strengthens the candidacy of DISC1 as a risk factor for schizophrenia in the general population and suggests that more intensive searching for causative variants is justified.
Journal ArticleDOI
Are the estrogen receptors involved in Alzheimer's disease?
Jean-Charles Lambert,Judith Harris,David G. Mann,Helen Lemmon,John Coates,Alistair Cumming,D StClair,Corinne Lendon +7 more
TL;DR: Retrospective analysis shows that women who took estrogen replacement therapy may have less risk of cognitive decline and of developing Alzheimer's disease (AD), and may suggest that the risk for AD may be modulated only when both ERalpha and ERbeta have particular variations in their expression and/or biological activities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Convergence of linkage, association and GWAS findings for a candidate region for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia on chromosome 4p
Andrea Christoforou,Andrea Christoforou,Kevin A. McGhee,Stewart W. Morris,P. A. Thomson,Susan Anderson,Alan W. McLean,Helen S. Torrance,S Le Hellard,S Le Hellard,Benjamin S. Pickard,D StClair,Walter J. Muir,Walter J. Muir,Douglas Blackwood,Douglas Blackwood,David J. Porteous,Kathryn L. Evans +17 more
TL;DR: Convergence of linkage, association and GWAS findings for a candidate region for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia on chromosome 4p is found.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association analysis of Neuregulin 1 candidate regions in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
Rosie M. Walker,Andrea Christoforou,Pippa A. Thomson,Kevin A. McGhee,Kevin A. McGhee,Alan Maclean,Alan Maclean,Thomas W. Mühleisen,Jana Strohmaier,Vanessa Nieratschker,Markus M. Evans +23 more
TL;DR: This study supports the involvement of NRG1 variants in the less well studied 3' region in conferring susceptibility to SCZ and BPD in the Scottish population.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic differences between five European populations
Valentina Moskvina,Mike L. Smith,Dobril Ivanov,Douglas Blackwood,D StClair,Christina M. Hultman,Draga Toncheva,Michael Gill,Aiden Corvin,Colm O'Dushlaine,Derek W. Morris,Naomi R. Wray,Patrick F. Sullivan,Carlos N. Pato,Michele T. Pato,Pamela Sklar,Pamela Sklar,Shaun Purcell,Shaun Purcell,Peter Holmans,Michael Conlon O'Donovan,Michael John Owen,George Kirov +22 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that many SNPs show genome-wide significant differences within European populations and the magnitude of the differences correlate with the geographical distance, at least some of these differences are due to the selective advantage of polymorphisms within these loci.
