Journal ArticleDOI
Inverse Relation between Disease Severity and Expression of the Streptococcal Cysteine Protease, SpeB, among Clonal M1T1 Isolates Recovered from Invasive Group A Streptococcal Infection Cases
Rita Kansal,Rita Kansal,Allison McGeer,Donald E. Low,Anna Norrby-Teglund,Anna Norrby-Teglund,Malak Kotb,Malak Kotb +7 more
TL;DR: The data support the existence of both an “on-off” and a posttranslational regulatory mechanism(s) controlling SpeB production, and suggest that isolates with the speB gene in the “ off” state are more likely to spare the surface M protein and to be isolated from cases of severe rather than nonsevere invasive infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Triple reassortant H3N2 influenza A viruses, Canada, 2005.
Christopher W. Olsen,Alexander I. Karasin,Suzanne Carman,Yan Li,Nathalie Bastien,Davor Ojkic,David M. Alves,George Charbonneau,Beth M. Henning,Donald E. Low,Laura Burton,George Broukhanski +11 more
TL;DR: Since January 2005, H3N2 influenza viruses have been isolated from pigs and turkeys throughout Canada and from a swine farmer and pigs on the same farm in Ontario.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evasion of human innate and acquired immunity by a bacterial homolog of CD11b that inhibits opsonophagocytosis
Benfang Lei,Frank R. DeLeo,Nancy P. Hoe,Morag R. Graham,Stacy M. Mackie,Robert L. Cole,Mengyao Liu,Harry R. Hill,Donald E. Low,Michael J. Federle,June R. Scott,James M. Musser +11 more
TL;DR: The GAS Mac protein inhibits professional phagocyte function by a novel strategy that enhances pathogen survival, establishment of infection and dissemination by mimicking a host-cell receptor required for an innate immune response.
Neisseria gonorrhoeae Treatment Failure andSusceptibilitytoCefiximeinToronto,Canada
Vanessa Allen,Christine Seah,Irene Martin,Colin Lee,Heather Siebert,Roberto G. Melano,Donald E. Low +6 more
TL;DR: Cefixime is the only oral cephalosporin recommended for gonorrhea treatment, critical to the success of expedited partner therapy as mentioned in this paper, but it is not recommended as a front-line therapy.
