In vivo and in vitro swelling of cell walls during fruit ripening

TL;DR: Chemical and enzymatic removal of pectin from kiwifruit cell wall material supported the idea that swelling is associated with movement of water into voids left in the cellulose-hemicellulose network by the solubilised pECTin, but suggested that swelling in vivo was more complex than this.
Journal ArticleDOI

Galactose loss and fruit ripening: high-molecular-weight arabinogalactans in the pectic polysaccharides of fruit cell walls

TL;DR: In this article, cell wall material (CWM) was prepared from nine fruit species at two ripening stages (unripe and ripe) and extracted sequentially with 0.05m trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane-N,N, N′,N′-tetraacetic acid (CDTA), Na2CO3 and 4m KOH.
Journal ArticleDOI

New complexities in the synthesis of sucrose

TL;DR: After years of neglect, the gene encoding the last enzyme in the pathway, sucrose-phosphatase (SPP), has finally been cloned, revealing that SPS contains an SPP-like domain at the carboxy-terminus, to which SPP might bind.
Journal ArticleDOI

A highly specific l-galactose-1-phosphate phosphatase on the path to ascorbate biosynthesis

TL;DR: A specific L-galactose-1-phosphate (L-gal- 1-P) phosphatase is described that is partially purified from young kiwifruit berries and expressed in Escherichia coli and found that it showed 14-fold higher maximum velocity for l-gal -1-P than myo-inositol-1 -P.
