Journal ArticleDOI
A genomics approach reveals that aroma production in apple is controlled by ethylene predominantly at the final step in each biosynthetic pathway
Robert J. Schaffer,Ellen N. Friel,Edwige J. F. Souleyre,Karen Bolitho,Kate Thodey,Susan E. Ledger,Judith H. Bowen,Jun-Hong Ma,Bhawana Nain,Daniel Cohen,Andrew P. Gleave,Ross N. Crowhurst,Bart J. Janssen,Jia-Long Yao,Richard D. Newcomb +14 more
TL;DR: This analysis suggests that the initial and final enzymatic steps with the biosynthetic pathways are important transcriptional regulation points for aroma production in apple.
Journal ArticleDOI
Analyses of Expressed Sequence Tags from Apple
Richard D. Newcomb,Ross N. Crowhurst,Andrew P. Gleave,Erik H. A. Rikkerink,Andrew C. Allan,Lesley L. Beuning,Judith H. Bowen,Emma Gera,Kim R. Jamieson,Bart J. Janssen,William A. Laing,Steve McArtney,Bhawana Nain,Gavin S. Ross,Kimberley C. Snowden,Edwige J. F. Souleyre,Eric F. Walton,Yar-Khing Yauk +17 more
TL;DR: A substantial expressed sequence tag collection from various tissues of apple is produced, focusing on fruit tissues of the cultivar Royal Gala, indicating the presence of many genes involved in disease resistance and the biosynthesis of flavor and health-associated compounds.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Draft Genome Sequence of European Pear (Pyrus communis L. ‘Bartlett’)
David Chagné,Ross N. Crowhurst,Massimo Pindo,Amali H. Thrimawithana,Cecilia H. Deng,Hilary S. Ireland,Mark Fiers,Helge Dzierzon,Alessandro Cestaro,Paolo Fontana,Luca Bianco,Ashley Lu,Roy Storey,Mareike Knäbel,Munazza Saeed,Sara Montanari,Yoon Kyeong Kim,Daniela Nicolini,Simone Larger,Erika Stefani,Andrew C. Allan,Judith H. Bowen,Isaac Harvey,Jason W. Johnston,Mickael Malnoy,Michela Troggio,Laure Perchepied,Greg Sawyer,Claudia Wiedow,Kyungho Won,Roberto Viola,Roger P. Hellens,Lester Brewer,Vincent G. M. Bus,Robert J. Schaffer,Susan E. Gardiner,Riccardo Velasco +36 more
TL;DR: Analysis of the expansin gene family provided an example of the quality of the gene prediction and an insight into the relationships among one class of cell wall related genes that control fruit softening in both European pear and apple.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global gene expression analysis of apple fruit development from the floral bud to ripe fruit.
Bart J. Janssen,Kate Thodey,Robert J. Schaffer,Rob Alba,Rob Alba,Lena Balakrishnan,Rebecca Bishop,Judith H. Bowen,Ross N. Crowhurst,Andrew P. Gleave,Susan E. Ledger,Steve McArtney,Franz B. Pichler,Kimberley C. Snowden,Shayna Ward +14 more
TL;DR: Gene expression in apple fruit is coordinated with specific developmental stages and 16 genes for which expression patterns are similar in apple and tomato and these genes may play fundamental roles in fruit development are identified.
Journal ArticleDOI
Analysis of expressed sequence tags from Actinidia: Applications of a cross species EST database for gene discovery in the areas of flavor, health, color and ripening
Ross N. Crowhurst,Andrew P. Gleave,Elspeth A. MacRae,Charles Ampomah-Dwamena,Ross G. Atkinson,Lesley L. Beuning,Sean Bulley,David Chagné,K.B. Marsh,Adam J. Matich,Mirco Montefiori,Richard D. Newcomb,Robert J. Schaffer,Björn Usadel,Andrew C. Allan,Helen L. Boldingh,Judith H. Bowen,Marcus Davy,Rheinhart Eckloff,A. Ross Ferguson,Lena G. Fraser,Emma Gera,Roger P. Hellens,Bart J. Snowden,Edwige J. F. Souleyre,Matthew D. Templeton,Eric F. Walton,Daisy Wang,Mindy Y. Wang,Yanming Y Wang,Marion Wood,Rongmei Wu,Yar-Khing Yauk,William A. Laing +44 more
TL;DR: In this article, a collection of 132,577 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were derived mainly from four Actinidia species (A. chinensis, A. arguta and A. eriantha) and fell into 41,858 non redundant clusters (18,070 tentative consensus sequences and 23,788 EST singletons).
