Impact of 2019–2020 mega-fires on Australian fauna habitat
Michelle Ward,Ayesha I. T. Tulloch,Ayesha I. T. Tulloch,James Q. Radford,Brooke Williams,April E. Reside,Stewart L. Macdonald,Helen Mayfield,Martine Maron,Hugh P. Possingham,Hugh P. Possingham,Samantha J. Vine,James O'Connor,Emily Massingham,Aaron C. Greenville,John C. Z. Woinarski,Stephen T. Garnett,Mark Lintermans,Ben C. Scheele,Josie Carwardine,Dale G. Nimmo,David B. Lindenmayer,Robert M. Kooyman,Jeremy S. Simmonds,Laura J. Sonter,James E. M. Watson,James E. M. Watson +26 more
TL;DR: An assessment of the habitat of native vertebrate species burnt by the 2019–2020 Australian mega-fires shows that 70 taxa were severely affected, and 21 of these were already listed as threatened with extinction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pathways between contrasting ecotourism experiences and conservation engagement
TL;DR: In this article, the authors conducted interviews at two ecotourism destinations in Australia (a conservation-focused zoological park and a rainforest national park) to determine whether these experiences are associated with conservation engagement and if so, the pathways through which these might operate.
Journal ArticleDOI
The potential for applying “Nonviolent Communication” in conservation science
Brooke Williams,B. Alexander Simmons,B. Alexander Simmons,B. Alexander Simmons,Michelle Ward,Jutta Beher,Angela J. Dean,Tida Nou,Tania M. Kenyon,Madeline Davey,Courtney B. Melton,Phoebe J. Stewart-Sinclair,Niall L. Hammond,Emily Massingham,Carissa J. Klein +14 more
TL;DR: The potential utility of a particular communication technique, Nonviolent Communication (also known as Compassionate Communication or Collaborative Communication), in conservation science has been discussed in this article, where the authors argue that nonviolent communication could be used by conservation scientists and practitioners when communicating with colleagues, politicians, and the general public about important and sometimes contentious environmental issues.
Journal ArticleDOI
Disease Risk and Conservation Implications of Orangutan Translocations
Julie Sherman,Steve Unwin,Dominic A. Travis,Felicity Oram,Serge A. Wich,Ricko L. Jaya,Maria Voigt,Truly Santika,Emily Massingham,Dave J. I. Seaman,Erik Meijaard,Erik Meijaard,Marc Ancrenaz +12 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors collected data on orangutan releases and associated disease risk management in Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic, and developed a problem description for orangututan disease and conservation risks.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effectiveness of 20 years of conservation investments in protecting orangutans
Truly Santika,Julie Sherman,Maria Voigt,Marc Ancrenaz,Serge A. Wich,Kerrie A. Wilson,Hugh P. Possingham,Emily Massingham,Dave J. I. Seaman,Alison M. Ashbury,Taufiq Siddiq Azvi,Graham L. Banes,E. J. Spehar,Matthew J. Struebig,Ibrahim Sumardi,Albertus Tjiu,Rizki Wahyudi,Achmad Eko Yanuar,Erik Meijaard +48 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed a spatiotemporal framework for evaluating conservation investments and found that habitat protection, patrolling, and public outreach had the greatest return on investment for maintaining orangutan populations.
