Visualization of O-O peroxo-like dimers in high-capacity layered oxides for Li-ion batteries
Eric McCalla,Artem M. Abakumov,Artem M. Abakumov,Matthieu Saubanère,Matthieu Saubanère,Dominique Foix,Dominique Foix,Erik J. Berg,Gwenaëlle Rousse,Gwenaëlle Rousse,Gwenaëlle Rousse,Marie-Liesse Doublet,Marie-Liesse Doublet,Danielle Gonbeau,Danielle Gonbeau,Petr Novák,Gustaaf Van Tendeloo,Robert Dominko,Jean-Marie Tarascon +18 more
TL;DR: The fundamental relation between the anionic redox process and the evolution of the O-O bonding in layered oxides is established, and the design of safe and long-lasting batteries requires an understanding of the physical and chemical changes that occur during redox processes.
Journal ArticleDOI
The intriguing question of anionic redox in high-energy density cathodes for Li-ion batteries
Matthieu Saubanère,Matthieu Saubanère,Eric McCalla,Eric McCalla,Jean-Marie Tarascon,Jean-Marie Tarascon,Marie-Liesse Doublet,Marie-Liesse Doublet +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the ability of Li-ion batteries to stabilize the oxygen holes generated by Li-removal and to achieve a reversible oxo-to peroxo-like (2O2−/(O2)n−) transformation is elucidated by means of a metal-driven reductive coupling mechanism.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evidence for anionic redox activity in a tridimensional-ordered Li-rich positive electrode β-Li2IrO3.
Paul E. Pearce,Paul E. Pearce,Paul E. Pearce,Arnaud J. Perez,Arnaud J. Perez,Arnaud J. Perez,Gwenaëlle Rousse,Gwenaëlle Rousse,Gwenaëlle Rousse,Mathieu Saubanère,Mathieu Saubanère,Dmitry Batuk,Dmitry Batuk,Dominique Foix,Eric McCalla,Eric McCalla,Eric McCalla,Artem M. Abakumov,Artem M. Abakumov,Gustaaf Van Tendeloo,Marie-Liesse Doublet,Marie-Liesse Doublet,Jean-Marie Tarascon,Jean-Marie Tarascon,Jean-Marie Tarascon +24 more
TL;DR: Theoretical calculations elucidate the electrochemical similarities and differences of the 3D versus 2D polymorphs in terms of structural, electronic and mechanical descriptors and free the structural dimensionality constraint in designing high-energy-density electrodes for the next generation of Li-ion batteries.
Journal ArticleDOI
Understanding the Roles of Anionic Redox and Oxygen Release during Electrochemical Cycling of Lithium-Rich Layered Li4FeSbO6
Eric McCalla,Moulay Tahar Sougrati,Moulay Tahar Sougrati,Gwenaëlle Rousse,Erik J. Berg,Artem M. Abakumov,Nadir Recham,Kannadka Ramesha,Mariyappan Sathiya,Mariyappan Sathiya,Robert Dominko,Gustaaf Van Tendeloo,Petr Novák,Jean-Marie Tarascon,Jean-Marie Tarascon +14 more
TL;DR: It is shown that oxygen release occurs at a distinct voltage plateau from the peroxo/superoxo formation making this material ideal for revealing new aspects of oxygen redox processes in Li-rich oxides, and directly demonstrates the limited reversibility of the oxygenated species for the first time.
Journal ArticleDOI
Strong Oxygen Participation in the Redox Governing the Structural and Electrochemical Properties of Na-Rich Layered Oxide Na2IrO3
Arnaud J. Perez,Dmitry Batuk,Matthieu Saubanère,Matthieu Saubanère,Matthieu Saubanère,Gwenaëlle Rousse,Gwenaëlle Rousse,Dominique Foix,Dominique Foix,Eric McCalla,Eric McCalla,Eric McCalla,Erik J. Berg,Romain Dugas,Romain Dugas,Karel H. W. van den Bos,Marie-Liesse Doublet,Marie-Liesse Doublet,Danielle Gonbeau,Danielle Gonbeau,Artem M. Abakumov,Gustaaf Van Tendeloo,Jean-Marie Tarascon,Jean-Marie Tarascon +23 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reported the electrochemical properties of a Na-rich phase Na2IrO3 which can reversibly cycle 1.5 Na+ per formula unit while not suffering from oxygen release nor cationic migrations.
