Journal ArticleDOI
Differential high-affinity interaction of dectin-1 with natural or synthetic glucans is dependent upon primary structure and is influenced by polymer chain length and side-chain branching.
Elizabeth L. Adams,Peter J. Rice,Bridget M. Graves,Harry E. Ensley,Hai Yu,Gordon D. Brown,Siamon Gordon,Mario A. Monteiro,Erzsebet Papp-Szabo,Douglas W. Lowman,Trevor D. Power,Michael F. Wempe,David L. Williams +12 more
TL;DR: This study examined the effect of glucan structure on recognition and binding by murine recombinant Dectin-1 with a library of natural product and synthetic (1→3)-β/(1→6)-β-glucans as well as nonglucan polymers and found that glucan derived from a saprophytic yeast was recognized with higher affinity than glucanderived from the pathogen Candida albicans.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of Cations on the Structure of Bilayers Formed by Lipopolysaccharides Isolated from Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1
Norbert Kučerka,Erzsebet Papp-Szabo,Mu-Ping Nieh,Thad A. Harroun,Sarah R. Schooling,Jeremy Pencer,Eric Nicholson,Terry J. Beveridge,John Katsaras +8 more
TL;DR: From the one-dimensional neutron scattering length density profiles, it is found that water penetrates Ca2+-LPS bilayers to a lesser extent than either Na+- or Mg2-L PS bilayers, which could have implications as to how small molecules permeate the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria and, possibly, how nonlamellar phases are formed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structure and Hydration of Highly-Branched, Monodisperse Phytoglycogen Nanoparticles
Jonathan D. Nickels,Jonathan D. Nickels,John Atkinson,Erzsebet Papp-Szabo,Christopher B. Stanley,Souleymane Diallo,Stefania Perticaroli,Benjamin Baylis,Perry Mahon,Georg Ehlers,John Katsaras,John Katsaras,John Dutcher +12 more
TL;DR: In this article, the structure and hydration of aqueous dispersions of phytoglycogen nanoparticles using neutron scattering was characterized. But the authors did not consider the effect of the number of water molecules in the dispersions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Calcium ions induce collapse of charged O-side chains of lipopolysaccharides from Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Emanuel Schneck,Erzsebet Papp-Szabo,Bonnie Quinn,Oleg Konovalov,Terry J. Beveridge,David A. Pink,Motomu Tanaka +6 more
TL;DR: Electron density profiles were reconstructed from the reflectivity curves, and they indicate that the presence of Ca2+ ions induces a significant change in the conformation of the charged polysaccharide head groups (O-side chains).
Journal ArticleDOI
Mutation of waaC, Encoding Heptosyltransferase I in Campylobacter jejuni 81-176, Affects the Structure of both Lipooligosaccharide and Capsular Carbohydrate
TL;DR: Complementation of the C. jejuni waaC gene into a chromosomal locus resulted in LOS and capsular structures identical to those expressed in the parent strain, and the presence of O-methyl phosphoramidate in wild-type strain 81-176 capsular polysaccharide is reported.
