An Introduction to MultiAgent Systems.

Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the protocol backing the core routing decisions on the Internet. It maintains a table of IP networks or 'prefixes' which designate network reachability among autonomous systems (AS). Point of concern in BGP is its lack of effective security measures which makes Internet vulnerable to different forms of attacks. Many solutions have been proposed till date to combat BGP security issues but not a single one is deployable in practical scenario. Any security proposal with optimal solution should offer adequate security functions, performance overhead and deployment cost. This paper critically analyzes the deployment issues of best three proposals considering trade-off between security functions and performance overhead.

We study the barrier coverage problem using relocatable sensor nodes. We assume each sensor can sense an intruder or event inside its sensing range. Sensors are initially located at arbitrary positions on the barrier and can move along the barrier. The goal is to find final positions for sensors so that the entire barrier is covered. In recent years, the problem has been studied extensively in the centralized setting. In this paper, we study the problem in the distributed setting. We assume each sensor repeatedly executes a Look-Compute-Move cycle: based on what it sees in its vicinity, it makes a decision on where to move, and moves to its next position. We make two strong but realistic restrictions on the capabilities of sensors: they have a constant visibility range and can move only a constant distance in every cycle. In this model, we give the first two distributed algorithms that achieve barrier coverage for a line segment barrier when there are enough nodes in the network to cover the entire barrier. Our algorithms are synchronous, and local in the sense that sensors make their decisions independently based only on what they see within their constant visibility range. One of our algorithms is oblivious whereas the other uses two bits of memory at each sensor to store the type of move made in the previous step. We show that our oblivious algorithm terminates within Θ(n2) steps with the barrier fully covered, while the constant-memory algorithm is shown to take Θ(n) steps to terminate in the worst case. Since any algorithm that can only move a constant distance in one step requires Ω(n) steps on some inputs, our second algorithm is asymptotically optimal. Finally, both our algorithms are self-stabilizing, and can be easily extended to the case of non-homogeneous sensors, and for the case when the barrier is a circle.

We consider broadcasting in radio networks that are subject to permanent node failures of unknown location. Nodes are spread in a region in some regular way. We consider two cases: nodes are either situated at integer points of a line or they are situated on the plane, at grid points of a square or hexagonal mesh. Nodes send messages in synchronous time slots. Each node v has a given transmission range of the same radius R. All nodes located within this range can receive messages from v. However, a node situated in the range of two or more nodes that send messages simultaneously, cannot receive these messages and hears only noise. Faulty nodes do not receive or send any messages.

Memoryless search algorithms in a network with faulty advice

Let φ be a random Boolean formula that is an instance of 3-SAT. We consider the problem of computing the least real number κ such that if the ratio of the number of clauses over the number of variables of φ strictly exceeds κ, then φ is almost certainly unsatisfiable. By a well known and more or less straightforward argument, it can be shown that k ≤ 5.191. This upper bound was improved by Kamath, Motwani, Palem, and Spirakis to 4.758, by first providing new improved bounds for the occupancy problem. There is strong experimental evidence that the value of κ is around 4.2. In this work, we define, in terms of the random formula φ, a decreasing sequence of random variables such that if the expected value of any one of them converges to zero, then φ is almost certainly unsatisfiable. By letting the expected value of the first term of the sequence converge to zero, we obtain, by simple and elementary computations, an upper bound for κ equal to 4.667. From the expected value of the second term of the sequence, we get the value 4.598. In general, by letting the expected value of further terms of this sequence converge to zero, one can, if the calculations are performed, obtain even better approximations to κ. This technique generalizes in a straightforward manner to κ-SAT, for κ > 3.
