Journal ArticleDOI
Relative Biological Effectiveness Variation Along Monoenergetic and Modulated Bragg Peaks of a 62-MeV Therapeutic Proton Beam: A Preclinical Assessment
Pankaj Chaudhary,Thomas I. Marshall,F. M. Perozziello,Lorenzo Manti,Frederick Currell,F. Hanton,Stephen J. McMahon,Joy N. Kavanagh,G.A.P. Cirrone,Francesco Romano,Kevin M. Prise,Giuseppe Schettino +11 more
TL;DR: This work presents a comparative investigation of cell killing RBE variations along monoenergetic and modulated proton beams using human normal and radioresistant cells with the aim to investigate the RBE dependence on LET and intrinsic radiosensitvity and highlights the limitation of adoption of a constant RBE for proton therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI
DNA DSB Repair Dynamics following Irradiation with Laser-Driven Protons at Ultra-High Dose Rates.
F. Hanton,Pankaj Chaudhary,Domenico Doria,D. Gwynne,Carla Maiorino,C. Scullion,Hamad Ahmed,Thomas I. Marshall,K. Naughton,Lorenzo Romagnani,Satyabrata Kar,Giuseppe Schettino,Paul McKenna,Stanley W. Botchway,Dan Symes,P. P. Rajeev,Kevin M. Prise,Marco Borghesi +17 more
TL;DR: Foci per cell per track values showed a good correlation between the laser and cyclotron-accelerated protons indicating similarity in the DNA DSB induction and repair, independent of the time duration over which the dose was delivered.
Journal ArticleDOI
Calibration of BAS-TR image plate response to high energy (3-300 MeV) carbon ions
Domenico Doria,Satyabrata Kar,Hamad Ahmed,Aaron Alejo,J. Fernandez,Mirela Cerchez,Ross Gray,F. Hanton,D. A. MacLellan,Paul McKenna,Zulfikar Najmudin,David Neely,Lorenzo Romagnani,Jesus Alvarez Ruiz,Gianluca Sarri,C. Scullion,M. J. V. Streeter,M. Swantusch,Oswald Willi,Matthew Zepf,Marco Borghesi +20 more
TL;DR: The calibration of Fuji BAS-TR image plate (IP) response to high energy carbon ions of different charge states is presented by employing an intense laser-driven ion source, which allowed access to carbon energies up to 270 MeV.
Journal ArticleDOI
Modified Thomson spectrometer design for high energy, multi-species ion sources
D. Gwynne,Satyabrata Kar,Domenico Doria,Hamad Ahmed,M. Cerchez,J. Fernandez,Ross Gray,J. S. Green,F. Hanton,D. A. MacLellan,Paul McKenna,Zulfikar Najmudin,David Neely,J. A. Ruiz,Angelo Schiavi,M. Streeter,M. Swantusch,O. Willi,Matthew Zepf,Marco Borghesi +19 more
TL;DR: A modification to the standard Thomson parabola spectrometer is discussed, which is designed to measure high energy (tens of MeV/nucleon), broad bandwidth spectra of multi-species ions accelerated by intense laser plasma interactions, to implement a pair of extended, trapezoidal shaped electric plates.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dynamic control of laser driven proton beams by exploiting self-generated, ultrashort electromagnetic pulses
Satyabrata Kar,Hamad Ahmed,Gagik Nersisyan,S. Brauckmann,F. Hanton,Anna Lena Giesecke,K. Naughton,Oswald Willi,Ciaran Lewis,Marco Borghesi +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, a helical coil structure was used to control the divergence of broadband laser-driven proton beams by winding the supporting wire around the proton beam axis to create helical coils, which provided focussing and energy selection in addition to post-accelerating the transiting protons.
