Widespread amphibian extinctions from epidemic disease driven by global warming
J. Alan Pounds,Martín R. Bustamante,Luis A. Coloma,Jamie A. Consuegra,Michael P. L. Fogden,Pru N Foster,Pru N Foster,Enrique La Marca,Karen L. Masters,Andrés Merino-Viteri,Robert Puschendorf,Santiago R. Ron,Santiago R. Ron,G. Arturo Sánchez-Azofeifa,Christopher J. Still,Bruce E. Young +15 more
TL;DR: It is shown that a recent mass extinction associated with pathogen outbreaks is tied to global warming, and it is proposed that temperatures at many highland localities are shifting towards the growth optimum of Batrachochytrium, thus encouraging outbreaks.
Journal ArticleDOI
Measuring the effectiveness of protected area networks in reducing deforestation
TL;DR: The results show that, with appropriate empirical methods, conservation scientists and policy makers can better understand the relationships between human and natural systems and can use this to guide their attempts to protect critical ecosystem services.
Journal ArticleDOI
Countryside biogeography: use of human-dominated habitats by the avifauna of southern costa rica
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared the composition of the avifauna found in forest- fragment and open habitats of the countryside, and assessed the faunal change that has occurred since deforestation in southern Costa Rica.
Journal ArticleDOI
Costa Rica's Payment for Environmental Services Program: Intention, Implementation, and Impact
TL;DR: Costa Rica's PSA program is a major advance in the global institutionalization of ecosystem investments because few, if any, other countries have such a conservation history and because much can be learned from Costa Rica's experiences.
Journal ArticleDOI
