Journal ArticleDOI

Detection and Molecular Characterization of 9000-Year-Old Mycobacterium tuberculosis from a Neolithic Settlement in the Eastern Mediterranean

TL;DR: Human tuberculosis was confirmed by morphological and molecular methods in a population living in one of the first villages with evidence of agriculture and animal domestication and gave support to the theory of a long-term co-existence of host and pathogen.
Journal ArticleDOI

Tuberculosis: from prehistory to Robert Koch, as revealed by ancient DNA.

TL;DR: The most successful application of ancient DNA (aDNA) is reviewed, which is the study of tuberculosis, which provided direct support for the current theory of Mycobacterium tuberculosis evolution, and suggests areas of investigation for the interaction of M tuberculosis with its host.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mesozoic origin for West Indian insectivores

TL;DR: Combined gene sequences from S. paradoxus established that solenodons diverged from other eulipotyphlan insectivores 76 million years ago in the Cretaceous period, which is consistent with vicariance, though also compatible with dispersal.
Journal ArticleDOI

Determining the Sex of Infanticide Victims from the Late Roman Era through Ancient DNA Analysis

TL;DR: A DNA-based sex identification of the infant remains was performed in this article, showing that the high frequency of males suggests selective preservation of females and that the infants may have been offspring of courtesans serving in the bathhouse, supporting its use as a brothel.
