Journal ArticleDOI
Treatment of severe systemic inflammatory response syndrome and sepsis with a novel bradykinin antagonist, deltibant (CP-0127). Results of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. CP-0127 SIRS and Sepsis Study Group.
Alan M. Fein,Gordon R. Bernard,Gerard J. Criner,Eugene Fletcher,James T. Good,William A. Knaus,Howard Levy,George M. Matuschak,Harvey M. Shanies,Robert W. Taylor,Timothy C. Rodell +10 more
TL;DR: Deltibant may have some effect on survival in patients with SIRS and gram-negative sepsis; however, additional studies would be required to prove this.
Journal ArticleDOI
Atypical Sleep in Ventilated Patients: Empirical Electroencephalography Findings and the Path Toward Revised ICU Sleep Scoring Criteria
Paula L. Watson,Pratik P. Pandharipande,Brian K. Gehlbach,Jennifer L. Thompson,Ayumi Shintani,Bob S. Dittus,Gordon R. Bernard,Beth A. Malow,E. Wesley Ely +8 more
TL;DR: Analysis of polysomnographic data revealed profound deficiencies in standard scoring criteria due to a predominance of atypical polysOMnographic findings in ventilated patients, and a revised scoring scheme proved reliable in sleep staging and may serve as a building block in future work.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of Vitamin C, Thiamine, and Hydrocortisone on Ventilator- and Vasopressor-Free Days in Patients With Sepsis: The VICTAS Randomized Clinical Trial
Jonathan E. Sevransky,Richard E. Rothman,David N. Hager,Gordon R. Bernard,Samuel M. Brown,Timothy G. Buchman,Laurence W. Busse,Craig M. Coopersmith,Christine DeWilde,E. Wesley Ely,E. Wesley Ely,Lindsay M. Eyzaguirre,Alpha A. Fowler,David F. Gaieski,Michelle N. Gong,Alex Hall,Jeremiah S. Hinson,Michael H. Hooper,Gabor D. Kelen,Akram Khan,Mark Levine,Roger J. Lewis,Roger J. Lewis,Christopher J. Lindsell,Jessica S. Marlin,Anna McGlothlin,Brooks Moore,Katherine Lyn Nugent,Samuel K. Nwosu,Carmen C. Polito,Todd W. Rice,Erin P. Ricketts,Caroline C. Rudolph,Fred Sanfilippo,Kert Viele,Greg S. Martin,David W. Wright +36 more
TL;DR: In this article, a combination of vitamin C, thiamine, and hydrocortisone every 6 hours was shown to increase ventilator-and vasopressor-free days compared with placebo in patients with sepsis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diabetes does not alter mortality or hemostatic and inflammatory responses in patients with severe sepsis
Michiel E. Stegenga,Jean Louis Vincent,George M. Vail,Jin Xie,Douglas J. Haney,Mark D. Williams,Gordon R. Bernard,Tom van der Poll +7 more
TL;DR: The outcome of severe sepsis does not appear to be significantly influenced by the presence of diabetes, although in nondiabetic patients, however, admission hyperglycemia is associated with an increased mortality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Safety assessment of drotrecogin alfa (activated) in the treatment of adult patients with severe sepsis
Gordon R. Bernard,William L. Macias,David E. Joyce,Mark D. Williams,Joan E. Bailey,Jean Louis Vincent +5 more
TL;DR: Drotrecogin alfa (activated) significantly reduces mortality in severe sepsis and the efficacy and safety profiles have remained consistent over the conduct of multiple clinical trials.
