Warming trends in Asia amplified by brown cloud solar absorption
Veerabhadran Ramanathan,M. V. Ramana,Gregory Roberts,Dohyeong Kim,C. E. Corrigan,Chul Eddy Chung,David M. Winker +6 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that atmospheric brown clouds contribute as much as the recent increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gases to regional lower atmospheric warming trends and the combined warming trend of 0.25 K per decade may be sufficient to account for the observed retreat of the Himalayan glaciers.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Continuous-Flow Streamwise Thermal-Gradient CCN Chamber for Atmospheric Measurements
Gregory Roberts,Athanasios Nenes +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a cylindrical continuous-flow thermal-gradient diffusion chamber employing a novel technique of generating a supersaturation is proposed to maximize the growth rate of activated droplets, thereby enhancing the performance of the instrument.
Journal ArticleDOI
A global database of sea surface dimethylsulfide (DMS) measurements and a procedure to predict sea surface DMS as a function of latitude, longitude, and month
A. J. Kettle,Meinrat O. Andreae,David Amouroux,T. W. Andreae,Timothy S. Bates,Harald Berresheim,Heinz Bingemer,R. Boniforti,Mark A. J. Curran,Giacomo R. DiTullio,G. Helas,Graham B Jones,Maureen D. Keller,Ronald P. Kiene,Caroline Leck,Maurice Levasseur,Gillian Malin,M. Maspero,Patricia A. Matrai,A. R. McTaggart,Nikos Mihalopoulos,B. C. Nguyen,A. Novo,J. P. Putaud,Spyridon Rapsomanikis,Gregory Roberts,G. Schebeske,Sangeeta Sharma,Rafel Simó,R. Staubes,Suzanne M. Turner,G Uher +31 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a database of 15,617 point measurements of dimethylsulfide (DMS) in surface waters along with lesser amounts of data for aqueous and particulate DMS, chlorophyll concentration, sea surface salinity and temperature, and wind speed has been assembled.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bringing the ocean into the laboratory to probe the chemical complexity of sea spray aerosol
Kimberly A. Prather,Timothy H. Bertram,Vicki H. Grassian,Grant B. Deane,M. Dale Stokes,Paul J. DeMott,Lihini I. Aluwihare,Brian Palenik,Farooq Azam,John H. Seinfeld,Ryan C. Moffet,Mario J. Molina,Christopher D. Cappa,Franz M. Geiger,Gregory Roberts,Lynn M. Russell,Andrew P. Ault,Jonas Baltrusaitis,Jonas Baltrusaitis,Douglas B. Collins,C. E. Corrigan,Luis A. Cuadra-Rodriguez,C. J. Ebben,Sara D. Forestieri,Timothy L. Guasco,S. P. Hersey,Michelle J. Kim,William F. Lambert,Robin L. Modini,Wilton Mui,Byron E. Pedler,Matthew J. Ruppel,O. S. Ryder,Nathan G. Schoepp,Ryan C. Sullivan,Ryan C. Sullivan,Defeng Zhao +36 more
TL;DR: This work describes a newly developed approach for reproducing the chemical complexity of SSA in a laboratory setting, comprising a unique ocean-atmosphere facility equipped with actual breaking waves and shows SSA size and chemical mixing state are acutely sensitive to the aerosol production mechanism, as well as to the type of biological species present.
Journal ArticleDOI
Water‐soluble organic compounds in biomass burning aerosols over Amazonia 1. Characterization by NMR and GC‐MS
Bim Graham,Olga L. Mayol-Bracero,Pascal Guyon,Gregory Roberts,Stefano Decesari,M.Cristina Facchini,Paulo Artaxo,Willy Maenhaut,Peter Köll,Meinrat O. Andreae +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, water-soluble organic compounds (WSOCs) within the samples were characterized using a combination of 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy for chemical functional group analysis and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) for identification and quantification of individual low-molecular-weight compounds.
