This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Landfill leachate treatment: Review and opportunity

The increasing growth of the seafood processing industries considerably requires more industrial process activities and water consumption. It is estimated that approximately 10–40 m3 of wastewater is generated from those industries for processing one-tonne of raw materials. Due to limitations and regulations in natural resources utilization, a suitable and systematic wastewater treatment plant is very important to meet rigorous discharge standards. As a result of food waste biodegradability, the biological treatment and some extent of swim-bed technology, including a novel acryl-fibre (biofilm) material might be used effectively to meet the effluent discharge criteria. This chapter aims to develop understanding on current problems and production of the seafood wastewater regarding treatment efficiency and methods of treatment.

Reduction of Seafood Processing Wastewater Using Technologies Enhanced by Swim–Bed Technology

In these years, due to the increasing presence of molecules in industrial waste water from factories and petroleum refineries, the conventional biological methods cannot be used for complete treatment of the effluent therefore the need to newer technologies to degrade these refractory molecules into smaller molecules became very imperative. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) constitute a promising technology for the treatment of wastewaters. Fenton’s oxidation was one of the best known metal catalyzed oxidation reactions of water-miscible organic compounds. The mixture of FeSO4 or any other ferrous complex and H2O2 (Fenton’s reagent) at low enough pH, results in Fe2+ catalytic decomposition of H2O2 and proceeds via a free radical chain process that produces hydroxyl radicals which have extremely high oxidizing ability and could oxidize hard to decompose organic compounds in a short time. This work aims at highlighting Fenton’s oxidation processes operating at ambient conditions viz. photo-catalytic oxidation, Fenton’s chemistry and use of hydrogen peroxide. The pre-oxidation of an extremely polluted pharmaceutical wastewater, Direct Blue 71 (DB71) oil recovery industry wastewater, the fish canning industrial wastewater, Active pharmaceutical intermediates (API) in waste waters by Fenton’s oxidation process to degrade organic pollutants. The work highlights the basics of these individual processes including the reactor design aspects, the optimum parameters such as dosage of ferrous sulfate and hydrogen peroxide, pH and initial concentration of pollutants and a complete overview of the various applications to wastewater treatment by Fenton’s oxidation processes in the recent years. The objective of the paper is to present information concerning sources if heavy metals to waste, harmful effects of heavy metals, the problems posed by the disposal and recycling of heavy metals and heavy metal containing products, and to assess the options for substituting the heavy metals. In recent years, some heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, zinc, nickel, copper and chromium (III) or their compounds have been used extensively by various industries thus leading to sharp increase in the contamination especially of water. Because of their toxicity, the presence of any of these metals in excessive quantities will interfere with many beneficial uses of the water. As a result, the standard B discharge limit of these metals under Environmental Quality Act 1974 of Malaysia, (Sewage and Industrial Effluents) 1979 are kept below 1.0 mg/l in which the standard for Cd is 0.02 mg/l, 0.50 mg/l for Pb, 1.0 mg/l each for Zn, Ni, Cu and Cr (III). Despite of their potential toxicity, many of these metals are widely used, particularly by industries, which rely on solutions of the metallic ions. This paper reviews heavy metals pollution in Malaysia and potential removal techniques, which may be suitable to overcome the problem.
