The determination of ecological status in shallow lakes - a tested system (ECOFRAME) for implementation of the European Water Framework Directive
Brian Moss,D. Stephen,Cristina Alvarez,Eloy Bécares,Wouter van de Bund,S. E. Collings,Ellen Van Donk,Elvira de Eyto,Tõnnu Feldmann,Camino Fernández-Aláez,Margarita Fernández-Aláez,Rob J. M. Franken,Francisco García-Criado,Elisabeth M. Gross,Mikael Gyllström,Lars-Anders Hansson,Kenneth Irvine,Ain Järvalt,J. P. Jensen,Erik Jeppesen,Timo Kairesalo,Ryszard Kornijów,Teet Krause,Helen Künnap,Alo Laas,Evi Lill,Bogdan Lorens,Helen Luup,Maria Rosa Miracle,Peeter Nõges,Tiina Nõges,Mirva Nykänen,Ingmar Ott,Wojciech Peczula,Edwin T. Wilson +48 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a pan-European typology and classification system was developed for shallow lakes, which can easily be extended to all lakes, and two iterations were tested in the field on tranches of 66 lakes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Benthic macroinvertebrates in lake ecological assessment: A review of methods, intercalibration and practical recommendations
Sandra Poikane,Richard K. Johnson,Leonard Sandin,Ann Kristin Schartau,Angelo G. Solimini,Gorazd Urbanič,Kęstutis Arbačiauskas,Jukka Aroviita,Wim Gabriels,Oliver Miler,Martin T. Pusch,Henn Timm,Jürgen Böhmer +12 more
TL;DR: This study reviews and intercalibrates 13 benthic invertebrate-based tools across Europe and identifies the best-performing methods based on their responsiveness to different human impacts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Large‐scale relationships between basin and riparian land cover and the ecological status of European rivers
Jean-Gabriel Wasson,Bertrand Villeneuve,Arvo Iital,John Murray-Bligh,Marcela Dobiasova,Stanislava Bacikova,Henn Timm,Hervé Pella,Nicolas Mengin,André Chandesris +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed large-scale models linking invertebrate indices of ecological quality to river basin and riparian land cover in France, Slovakia, Estonia and UK, based on Partial Least Squares regressions at national and a hydro-ecoregion (HER) scales.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biogenic methane contributes to the food web of a large, shallow lake
Helen Agasild,Priit Zingel,Lea Tuvikene,Arvo Tuvikene,Henn Timm,Tõnu Feldmann,Jaana Salujõe,Jaana Salujõe,Kaire Toming,Kaire Toming,Roger Jones,Tiina Nõges +11 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that carbon derived from biogenic methane can contribute seasonally to the benthic food web and, to some extent, also to the pelagic food web, where the lake is covered by macrophytes, and suggest that protozoans could be a potentially important link from methane-oxidising bacteria to animals higher in the web.
Journal ArticleDOI
Response of macroinvertebrates and water quality to long-term decrease in organic pollution in some Estonian streams during 1990-1998
Henn Timm,Mari Ivask,Tõnu Möls +2 more
TL;DR: All but three variables for the reference and the test sites were different at the beginning of the sampling period; this difference remained only for a few sensitive indices such as ASPT and Danish Fauna Index at the end of the period, indicating general improvement in the environment.
