Journal ArticleDOI
Latino populations: a unique opportunity for the study of race, genetics, and social environment in epidemiological research.
Esteban G. Burchard,Luisa N. Borrell,Shweta Choudhry,Mariam Naqvi,Hui Ju Tsai,Jose R. Rodriguez-Santana,Rocio Chapela,Scott D. Rogers,Rui Mei,William Rodriguez-Cintron,Jose F. Arena,Rick A. Kittles,Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable,Elad Ziv,Neil Risch,Neil Risch +15 more
TL;DR: The historical events that led to the formation of contemporary Latino populations are reviewed and results from recent genetic and clinical studies are used to illustrate the unique opportunity Latino groups offer for studying the interaction between racial, genetic, and environmental contributions to disease occurrence and drug response.
Journal ArticleDOI
Population stratification confounds genetic association studies among Latinos
Shweta Choudhry,Shweta Choudhry,Natasha E. Coyle,Natasha E. Coyle,Hua Tang,Keyan Salari,Keyan Salari,Denise L. Lind,Suzanne Clark,Suzanne Clark,Hui Ju Tsai,Hui Ju Tsai,Mariam Naqvi,Mariam Naqvi,Angie Phong,Ngim Ung,Ngim Ung,Henry Matallana,Henry Matallana,Pedro C. Avila,Jesus Casal,Alfonso Torres,Sylvette Nazario,Richard A. Castro,Richard A. Castro,Natalie C. Battle,Natalie C. Battle,Eliseo J. Pérez-Stable,Pui-Yan Kwok,Dean Sheppard,Dean Sheppard,Mark D. Shriver,William Rodriguez-Cintron,Neil Risch,Neil Risch,Elad Ziv,Esteban G. Burchard,Esteban G. Burchard +37 more
TL;DR: The findings suggest that empirical assessment of the effects of stratification is critical to appropriately interpret the results of case-control studies in admixed populations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Age-Related Maculopathy: A Genomewide Scan with Continued Evidence of Susceptibility Loci within the 1q31, 10q26, and 17q25 Regions
Daniel E. Weeks,Yvette P. Conley,Hui Ju Tsai,Tammy S. Mah,Silke Schmidt,Eric A. Postel,Anita Agarwal,Jonathan L. Haines,Margaret A. Pericak-Vance,Philip J. Rosenfeld,T. Otis Paul,Andrew W. Eller,Lawrence S Morse,J. P. Dailey,Robert E. Ferrell,Michael B. Gorin +15 more
TL;DR: The interesting hypothesis that the effect of smoking on the risk of ARM is accentuated by a gene in the 10q26 region--a region implicated by four other studies is generated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Concordance between Patient Self-Reports and Claims Data on Clinical Diagnoses, Medication Use, and Health System Utilization in Taiwan
TL;DR: The overall concordance between claims records in the National Health Insurance Research Database and patient self-reports in the Taiwan National Health Interview Survey was moderate for clinical diagnosis and substantial for both medication use and health system utilization.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genome-wide association study identifies peanut allergy-specific loci and evidence of epigenetic mediation in US children
Xiumei Hong,Ke Hao,Christine Ladd-Acosta,Kasper D. Hansen,Hui Ju Tsai,Xin Liu,Xin Xu,Timothy A. Thornton,Deanna Caruso,Corinne A. Keet,Yifei Sun,Guoying Wang,Wei Luo,Rajesh Kumar,Ramsay Fuleihan,Anne Marie Singh,Jennifer S. Kim,Rachel E. Story,Ruchi Gupta,Peisong Gao,Zhu Chen,Sheila O. Walker,Tami R. Bartell,Terri H. Beaty,M. Daniele Fallin,Robert P. Schleimer,Patrick G. Holt,Kari C. Nadeau,Robert A. Wood,Jacqueline A. Pongracic,Daniel E. Weeks,Xiaobin Wang +31 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that the HLA-DR and -DQ gene region likely poses significant genetic risk for PA, and both single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are associated with differential DNA methylation levels at multiple CpG sites.
