Comment on ``Coral reef calcification and climate change: The effect of ocean warming''
Joan A. Kleypas,R. W. Buddemeier,C. M. Eakin,Jean-Pierre Gattuso,John M. Guinotte,Ove Hoegh-Guldberg,Roberto Iglesias-Prieto,P. L. Jokiel,Chris Langdon,William J. Skirving,Alan E. Strong +10 more
TL;DR: McNeill et al. as mentioned in this paper attempt to address an important question about the interactions of temperature and carbonate chemistry on calcification, but their projected values of reef calcification are based on assumptions that ignore critical observational and experimental literature.
Journal ArticleDOI
Chromophoric dissolved organic matter in experimental mesocosms maintained under different pCO2 levels
Emma Rochelle-Newall,Bruno Delille,Michel Frankignoulle,Jean-Pierre Gattuso,Stéphan Jacquet,Ulf Riebesell,Anja Terbrüggen,Ingrid Zondervan +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of elevated pCO2 on blooms of the coccolithophorid alga Emiliania huxleyi were investigated and no differences were observed in accumulation of CDOM over the 20 d of incubation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Near-future pH conditions severely impact calcification, metabolism and the nervous system in the pteropod Heliconoides inflatus.
Aurelie Moya,Aurelie Moya,Ella L. Howes,Ella L. Howes,Thomas Lacoue-Labarthe,Thomas Lacoue-Labarthe,Sylvain Forêt,Bishoy Hanna,Mónica Medina,Philip L. Munday,Jue-Sheng Ong,Jean Louis Teyssié,Gergely Torda,Gergely Torda,Sue-Ann Watson,David J. Miller,Jelle Bijma,Jean-Pierre Gattuso +17 more
TL;DR: Investigation of the response of the Mediterranean pteropod to pH values projected for 2100 under a moderate emissions trajectory shows the power of combining physiological and molecular approaches, and reveals the importance of behavioral analyses in studies aimed at understanding the impacts of low pH on marine animals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Calcification does not stimulate photosynthesis in the zooxanthellate scleractinian coral Stylophora pistillata
Jean-Pierre Gattuso,S. Reynaud-Vaganay,Paola Furla,Samantha Romaine-Lioud,Jean Jaubert,Isabelle Bourge,Michel Frankignoulle +6 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that calcification is not a significant source of photosynthetic CO 2 and that photosynthesis stimulates calcification rather than the opposite.
Journal ArticleDOI
Testing the effects of elevated pco2 on coccolithophores (prymnesiophyceae): comparison between haploid and diploid life stages(1).
TL;DR: Elevated pCO2 has a significant effect on these three coccolithophore species, the haploid stage being more sensitive than that of the diploid stage, and this effect must be taken into account when predicting the fate of coccolithsophores in the future ocean.
