Mutually beneficial pollinator diversity and crop yield outcomes in small and large farms
Lucas Alejandro Garibaldi,Luísa G. Carvalheiro,Bernard E. Vaissière,Barbara Gemmill-Herren,Juliana Hipólito,Breno Magalhães Freitas,Hien T. Ngo,Nadine Azzu,Agustín Sáez,Jens Åström,Jiandong An,Betina Blochtein,Damayanti Buchori,Fermín J. Chamorro García,Fabiana Oliveira da Silva,Kedar Devkota,Márcia de Fátima Ribeiro,Leandro Freitas,Maria Cristina Gaglianone,Maria Goss,Mohammad Irshad,Muo Kasina,Alípio J.S. Pacheco Filho,Lúcia Helena Piedade Kiill,Peter Kwapong,Guiomar Nates Parra,Carmen S. S. Pires,Viviane C. Pires,Ranbeer S. Rawal,Akhmad Rizali,Antonio Mauro Saraiva,Ruan Veldtman,Blandina Felipe Viana,Sidia Witter,Hong Zhang +34 more
TL;DR: This study quantifies to what degree enhancing pollinator density and richness can improve yields on 344 fields from 33 pollinator-dependent crop systems in small and large farms from Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Journal ArticleDOI
Local resources, linear elements and mass-flowering crops determine bumblebee occurrences in moderately intensified farmlands
Eveliina Kallioniemi,Jens Åström,Graciela Rusch,Sondre Dahle,Sandra Åström,Jan Ove Gjershaug +5 more
TL;DR: The results show that the quality and the spatial and temporal distribution of flower resources within the landscape are important drivers for bumblebees, but can create counterintuitive distribution patterns depending on the temporal and spatial resolution of the survey.
Journal ArticleDOI
Patch size matters more than dispersal distance in a mainland-island metacommunity.
Jens Åström,Jan Bengtsson +1 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that fragmentation can strongly influence species occurrence and abundance in natural systems that are limited by dispersal and show that the presence of a distant mainland can override the influence of nearby habitat patches on local diversity and abundance.
Journal ArticleDOI
At which spatial and temporal scales can fungi indicate habitat connectivity
Jenni Nordén,Jens Åström,Torbjörn Josefsson,Stefan Blumentrath,Otso Ovaskainen,Otso Ovaskainen,Anne Sverdrup-Thygeson,Björn Nordén +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used fungal occurrence data from a fixed number of spruce logs at 28 sites distributed across the Scandinavian Peninsula and explored the spatiotemporal scales at which the local communities were affected by connectivity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Paint it black: Efficacy of increased wind turbine rotor blade visibility to reduce avian fatalities
TL;DR: In this article, the authors applied contrast painting to the rotor blades of wind turbines to reduce the collision risk for a range of birds, including white-tailed eagles and raptors.
