Journal ArticleDOI

On the toughness of ductile adhesive joints

TL;DR: In this article, Tvergaard and Hutchinson (1994) applied an embedded fracture zone model to the mode I fracture of an adhesive joint comprised of a thin elastic-plastic metal layer joining two elastic substrates.
Journal ArticleDOI

Crack path selection in a brittle adhesive layer

TL;DR: In this paper, an asymptotic elasticity problem is analyzed to predict whether a straight crack path can occur within a brittle adhesive layer, and the location of the crack in terms of the combination of applied intensity factors and the mismatch in elastic moduli between the layer and the adjoining material.
Book ChapterDOI

Interface strength, work of adhesion and plasticity in the peel test

TL;DR: In this article, a cohesive zone model is proposed and analyzed for steady-state peeling of a thin rate-independent, elastic-plastic film bonded to an elastic substrate, and a traction-separation description of the interface is embedded within continuum characterizations of the film and substrate.
Journal ArticleDOI

The mechanics of coating delamination in thermal gradients

TL;DR: In this article, it is argued that delaminations, when observed within the oxide layer, can only be explained by the presence of a significant stress gradient in the coating, governed by these thermal circumstances.
