Respiration as the main determinant of carbon balance in European forests
Riccardo Valentini,Giorgio Matteucci,A. J. Dolman,Ernst Detlef Schulze,Corinna Rebmann,Eddy Moors,A. Granier,Patrick Gross,N.O. Jensen,Kim Pilegaard,Anders Lindroth,Achim Grelle,Christian Bernhofer,Thomas Grünwald,Marc Aubinet,Reinhart Ceulemans,Andrew S. Kowalski,Timo Vesala,Üllar Rannik,Paul Berbigier,Denis Loustau,Jón Guðmundsson,H. Thorgeirsson,A. Ibrom,K. Morgenstern,Robert Clement,John Moncrieff,Leonardo Montagnani,Stefano Minerbi,Paul G. Jarvis +29 more
TL;DR: Data of net ecosystem carbon exchange, collected between 1996 and 1998 from 15 European forests, confirm that many European forest ecosystems act as carbon sinks and indicate that, in general, ecosystem respiration determines netcosystem carbon exchange.
Journal ArticleDOI
Productivity overshadows temperature in determining soil and ecosystem respiration across European forests
Ivan A. Janssens,Harry Lankreijer,Giorgio Matteucci,Andrew S. Kowalski,Nina Buchmann,Daniel Epron,Kim Pilegaard,Werner L. Kutsch,Bernard Longdoz,Thomas Grünwald,Leonardo Montagnani,Sabina Dore,Corinna Rebmann,Eddy Moors,Achim Grelle,Üllar Rannik,K. Morgenstern,S. J. Dolman,Paul G. Jarvis,Reinhart Ceulemans,Riccardo Valentini +34 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented CO2 flux data from 18 forest ecosystems, studied in the European Union funded EUROFLUX project, and observed a significant correlation was observed between annual soil respiration (SR) and gross primary productivity (GPP) among the relatively undisturbed forests.
Journal ArticleDOI
Seasonality of ecosystem respiration and gross primary production as derived from FLUXNET measurements
Eva Falge,Dennis D. Baldocchi,John Tenhunen,Marc Aubinet,Peter S. Bakwin,Paul Berbigier,Christian Bernhofer,George Burba,Robert Clement,Kenneth J. Davis,Jan Elbers,Allen H. Goldstein,Achim Grelle,A. Oechel,Kyaw Tha Paw U,Kim Pilegaard,Üllar Rannik,Corinna Rebmann,Andrew E. Suyker,Riccardo Valentini,Kell B. Wilson,Steven C. Wofsy +31 more
TL;DR: In this paper, seasonal patterns of gross primary productivity (FGPP), and ecosystem respiration (FRE) of boreal and temperate, deciduous and coniferous forests, Mediterranean evergreen systems, a rainforest, temperate grasslands, and C3 and C4 crops were analyzed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phase and amplitude of ecosystem carbon release and uptake potentials as derived from FLUXNET measurements
Eva Falge,John Tenhunen,Dennis D. Baldocchi,Marc Aubinet,Peter S. Bakwin,Paul Berbigier,Christian Bernhofer,Jean-Marc Bonnefond,George Burba,Robert Clement,Kenneth J. Thorgeirsson,Giampiero Tirone,Andrew E. Turnipseed,Kell B. Wilson,Steven C. Wofsy +39 more
TL;DR: In this paper, seasonal patterns of net ecosystem carbon exchange (FNEE) using eddy covariance data of the FLUXNET data base ( http://www-eosdis.ornl.gov/FLUXNET ).
Journal ArticleDOI
Exposure to sulfur in soil explains pigmentation by pheomelanin in birds inhabiting Iceland
Sol Rodríguez-Martínez,Olafur Arnalds,Jón Guðmundsson,Maria Svavarsdottir,F.O. Gisladottir,Ólafur K. Nielsen,Ismael Galván +6 more
TL;DR: In this article , the authors explored for an association between the pheomelanin content of feathers in 35 breeding birds from 13 phylogenetically diverse species and 29 locations in Iceland, and the sulfur content of nearby soil samples.
