Journal ArticleDOI
Microbiome Diversity in the Bronchial Tracts of Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Raúl Cabrera-Rubio,Marian Garcia-Nuñez,Laia Setó,Josep M. Antó,Andrés Moya,Eduard Monsó,Alex Mira +6 more
TL;DR: The data confirm that the bronchial tree is not sterile in COPD patients and support the existence of a different microbiota in the upper and lower compartments.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exposure to air pollution and development of asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis throughout childhood and adolescence : a population-based birth cohort study
Ulrike Gehring,Alet H. Wijga,Gerard Hoek,Tom Bellander,Tom Bellander,Dietrich Berdel,Irene Brüske,Elaine Fuertes,Olena Gruzieva,Joachim Heinrich,Barbara Hoffmann,Johan C. de Jongste,Claudia Klümper,Gerard H. Koppelman,Michal Korek,Ursula Krämer,Dieter Maier,Erik Melén,Erik Melén,Göran Pershagen,Göran Pershagen,Dirkje S. Postma,Marie Standl,Andrea von Berg,Josep M. Antó,Jean Bousquet,Thomas Keil,Thomas Keil,Henriette A. Smit,Bert Brunekreef +29 more
TL;DR: Exposure to air pollution early in life might contribute to the development of asthma throughout childhood and adolescence, particularly after age 4 years, when asthma can be more reliably diagnosed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Underestimation of airflow obstruction among young adults using FEV1/FVC <70% as a fixed cut-off: a longitudinal evaluation of clinical and functional outcomes
Isa Cerveri,Angelo Corsico,Simone Accordini,Rosanna Niniano,E. Ansaldo,Josep M. Antó,N Künzli,Christer Janson,Jordi Sunyer,Deborah Jarvis,C Svanes,T. Gislason,Joachim Heinrich,Jan P. Schouten,M. Wjst,Peter Burney,R de Marco +16 more
TL;DR: The findings show the importance of using statistically derived spirometric criteria to identify airflow obstruction and the lower limit of normal (LLN) is physiologically appropriate but it still needs a clinical validation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Total serum IgE is associated with asthma independently of specific IgE levels. The Spanish Group of the European Study of Asthma
TL;DR: Findings reinforce previous evidence that asthma is associated with increased levels of total IgE, even in subjects negative for specific IgE to common aeroallergens, as well as individuals with current wheezing and bronchial responsiveness without attacks of asthma.
Journal ArticleDOI
Air pollution and mortality in Barcelona
TL;DR: Current air pollutant levels were related to mortality in Barcelona, consistent with similar studies in other cities and coherent with previous studies with emergency room admissions in Barcelona.
