Journal ArticleDOI
Primary open-angle glaucoma.
Robert N. Weinreb,Christopher Kai-Shun Leung,Jonathan G Crowston,Felipe A. Medeiros,David S. Friedman,Janey L. Wiggs,Keith R Martin +6 more
TL;DR: Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is the most common type and management of POAG includes topical drug therapies and surgery to reduce IOP, although new therapies targeting neuroprotection of RGCs and axonal regeneration are under development.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dietary α-Linolenic Acid Reduces Inflammatory and Lipid Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Hypercholesterolemic Men and Women
Guixiang Zhao,Terry D. Etherton,Keith R Martin,Sheila G. West,Peter J. Gillies,Penny M. Kris-Etherton +5 more
TL;DR: ALA appears to decrease CVD risk by inhibiting vascular inflammation and endothelial activation beyond its lipid-lowering effects.
Journal ArticleDOI
Latanoprost for open-angle glaucoma (UKGTS): a randomised, multicentre, placebo-controlled trial
David F. Garway-Heath,David P. Crabb,Catey Bunce,Gerassimos Lascaratos,Francesca Amalfitano,Nitin Anand,Augusto Azuara-Blanco,Rupert R A Bourne,David C Broadway,Ian A. Cunliffe,Jeremy P. Diamond,Scott G Fraser,Tuan A. Ho,Keith R Martin,Andrew McNaught,Anil Negi,Krishna Patel,Richard A. Russell,Richard A. Russell,Ameet Shah,Paul G. D. Spry,Katsuyoshi Suzuki,E.T. White,Richard Wormald,Wen Xing,Thierry Zeyen +25 more
TL;DR: This is the first randomised placebo-controlled trial to show preservation of the visual field with an intraocular-pressure-lowering drug in patients with open-angle glaucoma, and visual field preservation was significantly longer in the latanoprost group than in the placebo group.
Journal ArticleDOI
Gene therapy with brain-derived neurotrophic factor as a protection: Retinal ganglion cells in a rat glaucoma model
Keith R Martin,Harry A. Quigley,Donald J. Zack,Hana Levkovitch-Verbin,Jennifer Kielczewski,Danielle Valenta,Lisa A. Baumrind,Mary E. Pease,Ronald Klein,William W. Hauswirth +9 more
TL;DR: Overexpression of the BDNF gene protects RGC as estimated by axon counts in a rat glaucoma model, further supporting the potential feasibility of neurotrophic therapy as a complement to the lowering of IOP in the treatment of glAUcoma.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dietary α-linolenic acid inhibits proinflammatory cytokine production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells in hypercholesterolemic subjects
Guixiang Zhao,Terry D. Etherton,Keith R Martin,Gillies Peter John,Sheila G. West,Penny M. Kris-Etherton +5 more
TL;DR: Increased intakes of dietary ALA elicit antiinflammatory effects by inhibiting IL-6, IL-1beta, and TNF-alpha production in cultured PBMCs, and changes in PBMC ALA and eicosapentaenoic acid are associated with beneficial changes in T NF-alpha release.
