Journal ArticleDOI
Artemisinin resistance in Plasmodium falciparum is associated with an altered temporal pattern of transcription
Sachel Mok,Mallika Imwong,Margaret J. Mackinnon,Joan Sim,Ramya Ramadoss,Poravuth Yi,Mayfong Mayxay,Mayfong Mayxay,Kesinee Chotivanich,Kek-Yee Liong,Bruce Russell,Duong Socheat,Paul N. Newton,Paul N. TL;DR: The decreased metabolic activities in the ring stages are consistent with previous suggestions of higher resilience of the early developmental stages to artemisinin and the increased capacity of protein synthesis and protein turnover in the schizont stage may contribute to art Artemisinin resistance by counteracting the protein damage caused by the oxidative stress and/or protein alkylation effect of this drug.
Journal ArticleDOI
Oxidative stress and protein damage responses mediate artemisinin resistance in malaria parasites.
Frances Rocamora,Lei Zhu,Kek-Yee Liong,Arjen M. Dondorp,Olivo Miotto,Sachel Mok,Zbynek Bozdech +6 more
TL;DR: A functional in vitro model of artemisinin resistance is presented that is underlined by a new set of genetic polymorphisms as potential genetic markers that could play a role in regulating art Artemisinin response in natural infections.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structural polymorphism in the promoter of pfmrp2 confers Plasmodium falciparum tolerance to quinoline drugs.
TL;DR: A parasite clone that is derived from the 3D7 P. falciparum strain and shows increased resistance to chloroquine, mefloquine and quinine through the trophozoite and schizont stages is identified and it is demonstrated that the resistance phenotype is caused by a 4.1 kb deletion in the 5′ upstream region of the pfmrp2 gene.
Journal ArticleDOI
