Semiconductor-based Photocatalytic Hydrogen Generation

This critical review provides a processing-structure-property perspective on recent advances in cellulose nanoparticles and composites produced from them. It summarizes cellulose nanoparticles in terms of particle morphology, crystal structure, and properties. Also described are the self-assembly and rheological properties of cellulose nanoparticle suspensions. The methodology of composite processing and resulting properties are fully covered, with an emphasis on neat and high fraction cellulose composites. Additionally, advances in predictive modeling from molecular dynamic simulations of crystalline cellulose to the continuum modeling of composites made with such particles are reviewed (392 references).

Cellulose nanomaterials review: structure, properties and nanocomposites

Cellulose constitutes the most abundant renewable polymer resource available today. As a chemical raw material, it is generally well-known that it has been used in the form of fibers or derivatives for nearly 150 years for a wide spectrum of products and materials in daily life. What has not been known until relatively recently is that when cellulose fibers are subjected to acid hydrolysis, the fibers yield defect-free, rod-like crystalline residues. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNs) have garnered in the materials community a tremendous level of attention that does not appear to be relenting. These biopolymeric assemblies warrant such attention not only because of their unsurpassed quintessential physical and chemical properties (as will become evident in the review) but also because of their inherent renewability and sustainability in addition to their abundance. They have been the subject of a wide array of research efforts as reinforcing agents in nanocomposites due to their low cost, availability, renewability, light weight, nanoscale dimension, and unique morphology. Indeed, CNs are the fundamental constitutive polymeric motifs of macroscopic cellulosic-based fibers whose sheer volume dwarfs any known natural or synthetic biomaterial. He received his Ph.D. in 2004 in organic chemistry from Joseph Fourier University (Grenoble, France) jointly with CERMAV (Centre de Recherche sur les Macromolecules Vegetales) and Cadi Ayyad University (Marrakesh, Morocco). During his Ph.D., he worked on the structural characterization of cell wall polysaccharides and also performed surface chemical modification, mainly TEMPO-mediated oxidation, of crystalline polysaccharides, as well as their nanocrystals. Prior to joining NCSU, he worked as assistant professor at the French Engineering School of Paper, Printing and Biomaterials (PAGORA, Grenoble Institute of Technology, France) on the development of biodegradable nanocomposites based on nanocrystalline polysaccharides. He also spent two years as postdoctoral fellow at the French Institute for Agricultural Research, INRA, where he developed new nanostructured thin films based on cellulose nanowiskers. Cellulose nanocrystals: chemistry, self-assembly, and applications.

Summary Background Since December, 2019, Wuhan, China, has experienced an outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with COVID-19 have been reported but risk factors for mortality and a detailed clinical course of illness, including viral shedding, have not been well described. Methods In this retrospective, multicentre cohort study, we included all adult inpatients (≥18 years old) with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 from Jinyintan Hospital and Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital (Wuhan, China) who had been discharged or had died by Jan 31, 2020. Demographic, clinical, treatment, and laboratory data, including serial samples for viral RNA detection, were extracted from electronic medical records and compared between survivors and non-survivors. We used univariable and multivariable logistic regression methods to explore the risk factors associated with in-hospital death. Findings 191 patients (135 from Jinyintan Hospital and 56 from Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital) were included in this study, of whom 137 were discharged and 54 died in hospital. 91 (48%) patients had a comorbidity, with hypertension being the most common (58 [30%] patients), followed by diabetes (36 [19%] patients) and coronary heart disease (15 [8%] patients). Multivariable regression showed increasing odds of in-hospital death associated with older age (odds ratio 1·10, 95% CI 1·03–1·17, per year increase; p=0·0043), higher Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score (5·65, 2·61–12·23; p Interpretation The potential risk factors of older age, high SOFA score, and d-dimer greater than 1 μg/mL could help clinicians to identify patients with poor prognosis at an early stage. Prolonged viral shedding provides the rationale for a strategy of isolation of infected patients and optimal antiviral interventions in the future. A polymer-iron oxide nanocomposite film has been successfully synthesized by using a microporous regenerated cellulose film as template and aqueous ferrous chloride as precursor. The nanocomposite film was investigated with XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, and VSM. The nano-particles synthesized in situ were disk-shaped with a mean diameter of ≈24 and thicknesses of 2.5-3.5 nm. For the first time, the nanodisks were well aligned in the cellulose matrix to form an ordered multibilayer structure by the shrinkage of the hybrid film while drying The nanocomposite film displayed anisotropic magnetic properties as a result of the alignment of magnetic nanodisks. This work provides a novel and facile method for template synthesis nanoparticles and aligned nanocomposites.

Synthesis and Alignment of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles in a Regenerated Cellulose Film

Homogeneous synthesis and characterization of chitosan ethers prepared in aqueous alkali/urea solutions.

Nanocomposite cellulose films with obvious magnetic anisotropy have been prepared by in situ synthesis of plate-like Fe2O3 nanoparticles in the cellulose matrix. The influence of the concentrations of FeCl2 and FeCl3 solutions on the morphology and particle size of the synthesized Fe2O3 nanoparticles as well as on the properties of the composite films has been investigated. The Fe2O3 nanoparticles synthesized in the cellulose matrix was γ-Fe2O3, and its morphology was plate-like with size about 48 nm and thickness about 9 nm, which was totally different from those reported works. The concentration of FeCl2 and FeCl3 solution has little influence on the particle size and morphology of the Fe2O3 nanoparticles, while the content of Fe2O3 nanoparticles increased with the increase of the concentration of the precursor solution, indicating that porous structured cellulose matrix could modulate the growth of inorganic nanoparticles. The unique morphology of the Fe2O3 nanoparticles endowed the composite films with obvious magnetic anisotropy, which would expand the applications of the cellulose based nanomaterials.

In situ synthesis of plate-like Fe2O3 nanoparticles in porous cellulose films with obvious magnetic anisotropy

A water-insoluble polysaccharide (TM8) was isolated from sclerotium of Pleurotus tuber-regium by extraction with 0.5M NaOH aqueous solutions at 120 degrees C. Its chemical structure was confirmed by infrared, high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, and (13)C NMR in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) to be composed of beta-(1 --> 3)-D-glucan backbone chain linked with a branched glucose, one out of every three glycosyl units being substituted at C6 position. The glucan TM8 in DMSO was fractionated by nonsolvent addition method into ten fractions, and the solution properties were studied by size exclusion chromatography combined with multiangle laser light scattering (SEC-MALLS) and viscometry in DMSO at 30 degrees C. The dependencies of intrinsic viscosity [eta] and radius of gyration [(s(2)(1/2)(z-2)] on weight-average molecular mass M(w) for this glucan were found to be [eta] = (9.24 +/- 0.2) x 10(-2)M(w)(0.51 +/- 0.02) (cm(3)g(-1)) and [(s(2)(1/2)(z-2)] = (3.67 +/- 0.3) x 10(-2)M(w)(0.56 +/- 0.02) (nm) in the range of M(w) from 1.07 x 10(4) to 77.4 x 10(4). Based on current theories for a wormlike chain, the conformational parameters of the glucan TM8 were found to be 408 (nm(-1)) for M(L), 3.1 (nm) for q, and 16.8 for C(infinity), suggesting that the polysaccharide exists as a dense random-coil chain in DMSO, due to branched structure.
