Journal ArticleDOI
A consensus linkage map of the chicken genome
Martien A. M. Groenen,Hans H. Cheng,Nat Bumstead,Bernard F. Benkel,W. Elwood Briles,Terry Burke,Dave Burt,Lyman B. Crittenden,Jerry B. Dodgson,Jossi Hillel,Susan J. Lamont,Abel Ponce de Leon,Morris Soller,Hideaki Takahashi,Alain Vignal +14 more
TL;DR: The compact physical size of the chicken genome, combined with the large size of its genetic map and the observed degree of conserved synteny, makes the chicken a valuable model organism in the genomics as well as the postgenomics era.
Journal ArticleDOI
Analysis of avian leukosis virus DNA and RNA in bursal tumors: Viral gene expression is not required for maintenance of the tumor state
Gregory S. Payne,Sara A. Courtneidge,Lyman B. Crittenden,Aly M. Fadly,J. Michael Bishop,Harold E. Varmus +5 more
TL;DR: The structures of the aberrant proviruses and the absence of normal viral RNA in some tumors indicate that expression of viral genes is not required for maintenance of the tumor phenotype, in at least some cases, the mechanism of oncogenesis may involve stimulation of transcription of flanking cellular sequences by a viral promoter.
Journal ArticleDOI
Activation of the cellular oncogene c-erbB by ltr insertion: Molecular basis for induction of erythroblastosis by avian leukosis virus
TL;DR: Evidence is provided that ALV utilizes a similar mechanism in erythroblastosis induction by activating a different cellular oncogene, c-erbB, which provides a molecular explanation for the multipotency of slowly oncogenic retroviruses.
Journal ArticleDOI
c-erbB activation in ALV-induced erythroblastosis: novel RNA processing and promoter insertion result in expression of an amino-truncated EGF receptor.
Timothy W. Nilsen,Patricia A. Maroney,Raymond G. Goodwin,Fritz M. Rottman,Lyman B. Crittenden,M. A. Raines,Hsing Jien Kung,Hsing Jien Kung +7 more
TL;DR: A novel pathway of promoter insertion oncogenesis that stands in contrast to the pathways used in the activation of c-myc in B lymphomas is established.
Journal ArticleDOI
Transgenic chickens: Insertion of retroviral genes into the chicken germ line
TL;DR: One of the viruses is a candidate vector for insertion of foreign genes into the chicken germ line and transmitted from G-1 to the G-2 progeny in a Mendelian fashion thus proving that retroviral genes have been inserted into theChicken germ line.
