TL;DR: A draft genome sequence of the red jungle fowl, Gallus gallus, provides a new perspective on vertebrate genome evolution, while also improving the annotation of mammalian genomes.
Journal ArticleDOI
The evolution of genes: the chicken preproinsulin gene
Francine Perler,Argiris Efstratiadis,Peter Lomedico,Walter Gilbert,Richard D. Kolodner,Jerry B. Dodgson +5 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that not all of these sites are neutral and that they do not behave as accurate evolutionary clocks over long periods of time, but nucleotide substitutions leading to amino acid replacements are an excellent clock.
Journal ArticleDOI
A consensus linkage map of the chicken genome
Martien A. M. Groenen,Hans H. Cheng,Nat Bumstead,Bernard F. Benkel,W. Elwood Briles,Terry Burke,Dave Burt,Lyman B. Crittenden,Jerry B. Dodgson,Jossi Hillel,Susan J. Lamont,Abel Ponce de Leon,Morris Soller,Hideaki Takahashi,Alain Vignal +14 more
TL;DR: The compact physical size of the chicken genome, combined with the large size of its genetic map and the observed degree of conserved synteny, makes the chicken a valuable model organism in the genomics as well as the postgenomics era.
Journal ArticleDOI
Multi-Platform Next-Generation Sequencing of the Domestic Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo): Genome Assembly and Analysis

TL;DR: The combined application of next-generation sequencing platforms has provided an economical approach to unlocking the potential of the turkey genome.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: A clone-based physical map of the chicken genome at 20-fold coverage is presented, containing 260 contigs of overlapping clones, which represents approximately 91% of the genome and enables identification of chicken clones aligned to positions in other sequenced genomes.
