Journal ArticleDOI
Variable host-pathogen compatibility in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Sebastien Gagneux,Kathryn DeRiemer,Tran Van,Midori Kato-Maeda,Bouke C. de Jong,Sujatha Narayanan,Mark P. Nicol,Stefan Niemann,Kristin Kremer,M. Cristina Gutierrez,Markus Hilty,Philip C. Hopewell,Peter M. Small +12 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the global population structure of M. tuberculosis is defined by six phylogeographical lineages, each associated with specific, sympatric human populations, and in an urban cosmopolitan environment, mycobacterial lineages were much more likely to spread in sympatrics than in allopatric patient populations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ancient origin and gene mosaicism of the progenitor of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
M. Cristina Gutierrez,Sylvain Brisse,Roland Brosch,Michel Fabre,Bahia Omaïs,M. Marmiesse,Philip Supply,Véronique Vincent +7 more
TL;DR: The amount of synonymous nucleotide variation in housekeeping genes suggests that tubercle bacilli were contemporaneous with early hominids in East Africa, and have thus been coevolving with their human host much longer than previously thought.
Journal ArticleDOI
Snapshot of Moving and Expanding Clones of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Their Global Distribution Assessed by Spoligotyping in an International Study

TL;DR: To facilitate the analysis of hundreds of spoligotypes each made up of a binary succession of 43 bits of information, a number of major and minor visual rules were also defined to define 36 major clades (or families) of M. tuberculosis.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: This global distribution was defined by data-mining of an international spoligotyping database, SpolDB3, which contains 11,708 patterns from as many clinical isolates originating from more than 90 countries.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genetic Biodiversity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Complex Strains from Patients with Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Cameroon
Sara Ngo Niobe-Eyangoh,Christopher Kuaban,Philippe Sorlin,Patrick Cunin,Jocelyn Thonnon,Christophe Sola,Nalin Rastogi,Véronique Vincent,M. Cristina Gutierrez +8 more
TL;DR: Analysis of DNA polymorphisms in 455 Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex isolates from 455 patients to evaluate the biodiversity of tubercle bacilli in Ouest province, Cameroon identified a group of closely genetically related M. tuberculosis strains that are currently responsible for >40% of smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis cases in this region of Cameroon.
