A dearth of dark matter in ordinary elliptical galaxies

TL;DR: In this paper, the kinematics of the outer parts of three intermediate-luminosity elliptical galaxies were studied with the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph, and the galaxies' velocity-dispersion profiles were found to decline with the radius, and dynamical modeling of the data indicates the presence of little if any dark matter in these galaxies' halos.
Journal ArticleDOI

The GALEX-VVDS measurement of the evolution of the far-ultraviolet luminosity density and the cosmic star formation rate

TL;DR: Arnouts et al. as discussed by the authors used the same sample to study evolution of the FUV luminosity density, and they detected evolution consistent with a (1+z)^{2.5+/-0.7} rise to z~1.
Journal ArticleDOI

The importance of mergers for the origin of intracluster stars in cosmological simulations of galaxy clusters

TL;DR: In this paper, the origin of the diffuse stellar component (DSC) in 117 galaxy clusters extracted from a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation was studied. But the authors focused on finding the galaxy to which it once belonged at an earlier redshift, thus linking the presence of the DSC to galaxy formation history.
