Increasing cryospheric hazards in a warming climate

Determining food web architecture and its seasonal cycles is a precondition for making predictions about Antarctic marine biodiversity under varying climate change scenarios. However, few scientific data concerning Antarctic food web structure, the species playing key roles in web stability and the community responses to changes in sea-ice dynamics are available. Based on C and N stable isotope analysis, we describe Antarctic benthic food webs and the diet of species occurring in shallow waters (Tethys Bay, Ross Sea) before and after seasonal sea-ice break-up. We hypothesised that the increased availability of primary producers (sympagic algae) following sea-ice break-up affects the diet of species and thus food web architecture. Basal resources had distinct isotopic signatures that did not change after sea-ice break-up, enabling a robust description of consumer diets based on Bayesian mixing models. Sympagic algae had the highest δ13C (~ -14‰) and red macroalgae the lowest (~ -37‰). Consumer isotopic niches and signatures changed after sea-ice break-up, reflecting the values of sympagic algae. Differences in food web topology were also observed. The number of taxa and the number of links per taxon were higher before the thaw than after it. After sea-ice break-up, sympagic inputs allowed consumers to specialise on abundant resources at lower trophic levels. Foraging optimisation by consumers led to a simpler food web, with lower potential competition and shorter food chains. However, basal resources and Antarctic species such as the bivalve Adamussium colbecki and the sea-urchin Sterechinus neumayeri were central and highly connected both before and after the sea-ice break-up, thus playing key roles in interconnecting species and compartments in the web. Any disturbance affecting these species is expected to have cascading effects on the entire food web. The seasonal break-up of sea ice in Antarctica ensures the availability of resources that are limiting for coastal communities for the rest of the year. Identification of species playing a key role in regulating food web structure in relation to seasonal sea-ice dynamics, which are expected to change with global warming, is central to understanding how these communities will respond to climate change.

Seasonal Food Web Dynamics in the Antarctic Benthos of Tethys Bay (Ross Sea): Implications for Biodiversity Persistence Under Different Seasonal Sea-Ice Coverage

Knowledge of life on the Southern Ocean seafloor has substantially grown since the beginning of this century with increasing ship-based surveys and regular monitoring sites, new technologies and greatly enhanced data sharing. However, seafloor habitats and their communities exhibit high spatial variability and heterogeneity that challenges the way in which we assess the state of the Southern Ocean benthos on larger scales. The Antarctic shelf is rich in diversity compared with deeper water areas, important for storing carbon (“blue carbon”) and provides habitat for commercial fish species. In this paper, we focus on the seafloor habitats of the Antarctic shelf, which are vulnerable to drivers of change including increasing ocean temperatures, iceberg scour, sea ice melt, ocean acidification, fishing pressures, pollution and non-indigenous species. Some of the most vulnerable areas include the West Antarctic Peninsula, which is experiencing rapid regional warming and increased iceberg-scouring, subantarctic islands and tourist destinations where human activities and environmental conditions increase the potential for the establishment of non-indigenous species and active fishing areas around South Georgia, Heard and MacDonald Islands. Vulnerable species include those in areas of regional warming with low thermal tolerance, calcifying species susceptible to increasing ocean acidity as well as slow-growing habitat-forming species that can be damaged by fishing gears e.g., sponges, bryozoan, and coral species. Management regimes can protect seafloor habitats and key species from fishing activities; some areas will need more protection than others, accounting for specific traits that make species vulnerable, slow growing and long-lived species, restricted locations with optimum physiological conditions and available food, and restricted distributions of rare species. Ecosystem-based management practices and long-term, highly protected areas may be the most effective tools in the preservation of vulnerable seafloor habitats. Here, we focus on outlining seafloor responses to drivers of change observed to date and projections for the future. We discuss the need for action to preserve seafloor habitats under climate change, fishing pressures and other anthropogenic impacts.

Responses of Southern Ocean seafloor habitats and communities to global and local drivers of change

The seafloor beneath floating ice shelves accounts roughly a third of the Antarctic’s 5 million km2 of continental shelf. Prior to this study our knowledge of these habitats and the life they support was restricted to what has been observed from 8 boreholes drilled for geological and glaciological studies. The established theory of sub-ice shelf biogeography is that both functional and taxonomic diversity decrease along a nutrient gradient with distance from the ice shelf front, resulting in a depauperate fauna, dominated by mobile scavengers and predators towards the grounding line. Mobile macro- and megabenthic life have been observed as far as 700 km under an ice shelf. New observations from two boreholes in the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf challenge the idea that sessile organisms reduce in prevalence the further under the ice you go. The discovery of an established community consisting of only sessile, probably filter feeding, organisms (sponges and other taxa) on a boulder 260 km from the ice front raises significant questions, especially when the local currents suggest that this community is somewhere between 625 km and 1500 km in the direction of water flow from the nearest region of photosynthesis. This new evidence requires us to rethink our ideas with regards to the diversity of community types found under ice shelves, the key factors which control their distribution and their vulnerability to environmental change and ice shelf collapse.

Breaking All the Rules: The First Recorded Hard Substrate Sessile Benthic Community Far Beneath an Antarctic Ice Shelf

The calving of A‐68, the 5,800‐km², 1‐trillion‐ton iceberg shed from the Larsen C Ice Shelf in July 2017, is one of over 10 significant ice‐shelf loss events in the past few decades resulting from rapid warming around the Antarctic Peninsula. The rapid thinning, retreat, and collapse of ice shelves along the Antarctic Peninsula are harbingers of warming effects around the entire continent. Ice shelves cover more than 1.5 million km² and fringe 75% of Antarctica's coastline, delineating the primary connections between the Antarctic continent, the continental ice, and the Southern Ocean. Changes in Antarctic ice shelves bring dramatic and large‐scale modifications to Southern Ocean ecosystems and continental ice movements, with global‐scale implications. The thinning and rate of future ice‐shelf demise is notoriously unpredictable, but models suggest increased shelf‐melt and calving will become more common. To date, little is known about sub‐ice‐shelf ecosystems, and our understanding of ecosystem change following collapse and calving is predominantly based on responsive science once collapses have occurred. In this review, we outline what is known about (a) ice‐shelf melt, volume loss, retreat, and calving, (b) ice‐shelf‐associated ecosystems through sub‐ice, sediment‐core, and pre‐collapse and post‐collapse studies, and (c) ecological responses in pelagic, sympagic, and benthic ecosystems. We then discuss major knowledge gaps and how science might address these gaps.
